NALT has five primary focus areas across the United States with a density of existing conservation lands; Eastern Pennsylvania, Western North Carolina, the coast of South Carolina, North Georgia, and Central Alabama. These easements, particularly in our Georgia focus area, are within some of the most biodiverse regions of the country but are also experiencing some of the highest development pressure. We are so grateful for all of our partners and landowners in Georgia that make conserving over 30,000 acres possible! 🗺 NALT is in its 32nd year of operation and has permanently preserved more than 138,000 acres of natural land in 24 states, mostly through permanent conservation easements. NALT partners with landowners, municipalities, the real estate community, and other groups to protect environmentally and culturally significant landscapes that otherwise may be lost to alternative uses. Once a property is under NALT’s permanent stewardship, our experienced team of conservation professionals regularly monitor the land to ensure the integrity and longevity of the conservation resource. Reach out today to learn more about our focus areas and our goal to conserve the stunning diversity in these areas: info@nalt.org or www.nalt.org for more information. #georgialandconservation #georgia #landpreservation #conservation #naturepreserve #landtrust #landconservation #conservationeasements #landstewardship #stewardship #biodiversity #nature #wildlifeconservation #NALT #northamericanlandtrust

A win for nature!!! Recent attention in the media has put the spotlight on the dire state of our rivers; in England only 15% meet the criteria for ‘good’ ecological status and shockingly, none achieve ‘good’ status overall1. But there is hope, every year we are inspired by some of the best examples of river and catchment restoration showcased at the prestigious UK River Restoration Prize, awarded by UK River Restoration Centre (RRC). It’s five years since we launched the Trust’s flagship river restoration programme, Riverlands, in response to the growing nature and climate crises and we couldn’t be more excited to announce that this year two of our projects were selected as finalists at the 2024 awards. Our Cumbria Riverlands team scooped first prize in the catchment award alongside partner Ullswater Catchment Management CIC for their work restoring habitats around Ullswater2. To date, the collaboration has delivered 843 hectares of habitat restoration; initiatives covered over 13km of river restoration, 46 hectares of pond creation, over 16km of hedgerow creation, and significant restorations of wood pasture, peat, and wetlands. The works also included the ‘re-wiggling’ of Goldrill Beck which is often used as an exemplar. Riverlands Porlock Vale Streams project was a runner up, recognised for it’s pioneering and innovative approaches to both river restoration and land management aimed at restoring natural processes at a catchment scale. Work has created an extensive, connected ‘waterscape’ that is nature rich and resilient to extremes in climate, whilst also remaining productive. This included the UK’s first large scale main river restoration using the stage zero technique and species reintroductions with beaver and water vole. It’s fantastic to be recognised for the work we’ve been doing and huge thanks to our partners, funders, farmers and local communities; the work we’ve achieved demonstrates that together we can support natural rivers, thriving wildlife and resilient communities. A big congratulations to the other finalists and everyone involved. Sound intent, hard work and willing partners - nature restoration is so restorative for everyone who does it…
In the late 1990s, a group of friends embarked on a mission to rehabilitate a piece of land in central Victoria. Over the years, it’s been transformed into a thriving ecosystem, now home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Members said the group's ethos from the start was about enabling access to the site, especially for traditional owners, and anyone was welcome to be involved or visit. Today, the land also has a Trust for Nature covenant on it, ensuring it will remain a habitat forever. Across the country there are thousands of private landholders, including like in this story, who are helping to address some of the nation’s most critical conservation challenges by restoring endangered ecosystems, building the protected area estate, and deploying nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change. Private land conservation is an essential part of creating a healthy, resilient Australia. https://lnkd.in/e6s7vVcp

It's our favourite kind of post. A before and after post 😍 And it's a big one! *Before > After* Here's an area of restoration works on Bodmin Moor that took place in March looking incredible this week. You can see that *so much water* is being held back and slowed down in the landscape. The comparison with the dry, scrubby, eroding environment from before is clear. These works have made the area better for water, richer for wildlife, helpful for carbon storage, encouraging for plant diversity, and stronger for protecting the erosion of historic environment features. 💧 The water may draw down as we get into summer, but the design of the stone, peat and wooden blocks will help raise and stabilise the water table, encouraging peat-forming sphagnum mosses to colonise and build up. 🌱 Bracken should soon become flooded out, diversifying plant life to more bog species like the insect-eating sundew, bog bean, bog asphodel and cotton grasses 🌳 Willow will thrive, trapping sediment, filtering water and providing habitat for wildlife (we heard a willow tit out here yesterday) and we'll be seeing dragonflies, waterfowl and whirlygigs on these pools in no time at all. This was a challenging site for the team due to the sheer volume of water we've received this spring in the South West. The results are testament to our Project Officers thinking outside the box and working closely with skilled contractors to achieve this vision. The area will 'green up' as vegetation takes hold and we finally get some sunshine here in Cornwall, and our monitoring team will retake this picture in the next few months to show you how quickly it may change again. 🌞 SWPP is funded by Natural England South West Water (whose site this is and whose biodiversity improvements through conifer removal can be spotted in the background) #DuchyofCornwall Cornwall Council National Trust Environment Agency QUANTOCK AND EXMOOR LIMITED #peatland #peatlandrestoration #rewilding #regeneration #peatbogs #generationrestoration #nature #landscapemanagement #slowtheflow

It's been a really interesting experience to have a Trustee eye-view on the strategy work going on at the London Wildlife Trust over the past 6 months. Props to all involved, and looking forward to seeing where this leads. TLDR: Nature conservation is no longer enough. Our purpose is now: Nature recovery for a thriving city It is no longer sufficient to slow down the loss of the natural world or preserve what remains. Over 41% of our wildlife species have declined since the early 1970s, and 15% of species like skylark and linnet are now threatened with extinction from much of London. We cannot accept the status quo. We need to bring wildlife back, at scale and pace. To achieve this, we will empower more people and organisations to take notice of wildlife, reconnect with the natural world, and take action for nature. By bringing nature back into our lives and redefining our relationship with it, we will expand nature’s presence in our city. This will also help mitigate the impacts of a changing climate and transform London into a resilient, sustainable, and thriving city.
