Earlier this year the Credit Card Competition Act failed and we are now faced with an attempt to attach it to an unrelated defense spending measure, the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. This would benefit big box retailers while having a negative impact on consumers. Please join me in voicing your opposition to this act and let your elected officials know today! Figuring out how you’d like to use your money to make life better is as important (if not more) as how much & how quickly you want to make money. Otherwise, you’re just solving a problem that doesn’t exist. And it will take you a really long time to realise it. In an hypothetical world, if you’re financially independent, what will you do with all the money, the time & the energy ? They say, Money is a means to an end. What’s the end look like ? I think the answer to this question keeps on changing. But it’s important to ponder on it regularly to ensure you’re moving in the correct direction. PS: Whatever your end goal is, double check if money is really blocking you from pursuing it. PPS: please don’t share your answers in the comments. Generally, taxpayers will claim around $500 of non-cash donations, but if they keep track of their non-cash donations, we find families donate closer to $3000 worth. That means about $800 in tax refunds are being lost, every year! This type of deduction could save you hundreds or thousands of dollars each year, but you must document your contributions. After years of growing demand from across the Nation, we are now executing our measured plan to serve more young military and veteran families with our life-changing program. One of the elements of this strategy is to launch a specific fundraising campaign to expand STEP's workforce to manage the growing case-loads and organizational processes, as well as lock in occupancy costs and improve cash-flow through a building purchase. Our $6.5M campaign, which is themed "The Time Is Now," will help us meet the demands of today and tomorrow! As Support The Enlisted Project (STEP) continues to help our young military and veteran families permanently change their financial behaviors, with a 90% long-term success rate, more of our community is asking how they can help us execute our programs. Additionally, as inflationary pressures continue to wear away at our family's financial resources, they are turning to us at higher rates than previously seen. And we are proud that our donors and stakeholders agree that we should continue to deliver our programs, as they have already pledged $4.1M to our campaign to date. The event, organised by the Staffordshire Veterans Support Network (SVSN), will take place on April 4th, 2024, from 13:00 to 16:00 at : Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce, Festival Park, ST1 5BE. Our aim is to create a platform for veterans from the Staffordshire area to use as a support network by engaging with, not only other veterans, but with businesses that provide essential support and guidance to service leavers as they transition into civilian life and employment. Veterans attending the SVSN event will benefit from being able to engage with local businesses that have been specifically selected to attend based on their alignment of values with the Armed Forces Covenant. Home Base has been exceptionally fortunate to have developed deep ties to Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) and its' members like Hanscom Federal Credit Union, PenFed Credit Union and Service Credit Union . as well as industry groups like the Armed Forces Financial Network. In addition to philanthropy and sponsorship, these member companies provide invaluable education about the importance of financial wellness. The link between financial wellness and overall wellness is real. I recently attended a veterans summit hosted by CVS Health. One of the discussion topics was Military Families and Financial Readiness. From loss of security clearances due to poor personal financial management to food insecurity due to inflationary impacts on housing and subsistence allowances, particularly among junior enlisted personnel, more needs to be done in the area of financial education. In 2022, the Military Medicine Journal published research that "17% of veterans did not have the finances to pay for necessities, 50% did not have more than 3 month of savings, 38% of veterans were not saving for retirement and 13% were classified as having a 'troubled" financial status.
