For the first time in my over six year marketing career, I recently had the opportunity to manage two sponsorships for major sports events. Through the project management for this project, I learnt three key points: 1. Setting KPIs and visualise the results. 2. Maximising impact by utilising cross-channel marketing. 3. Developing strategies to convert newly aware potential users into active ones. Sponsorships in sports events typically involve brand and company logo exposure, so I considered the potential effects and the next steps post-implementation. Reflecting on this, I realised that it is not a one-off effort but a medium to long-term strategy where the effects of the sponsorship extend far beyond the event itself.

🎾Should I have waited until AFTER I defended my thesis to tell you about it? Probably, but I am so happy to have submitted it so here you go! Over the past few months, I have studied the pivotal role of digital marketing in shaping sporting legacies, with a focused examination of Hudayriyat Island's transformation into an emerging sports destination in Abu Dhabi in the last year. By looking into the Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master as a compelling case study, I aimed to highlight the profound impact of strategic digital marketing on cultivating emotional connections and enduring sports legacies. I drew conclusions from conversations I had with specialists in the field of major sporting events' marketing (quick nod to my good friend Ali El Shahed) and learned valuable insights from the sporting events that have been shaping Abu Dhabi's sports scene over the past decade. We already knew that major sporting events have evolved beyond mere spectacles, serving as platforms that attract global attention and boost local economies. But what isn't talked about enough is how now that social media intertwines athletes, teams, and fans, digital marketers need to evolve their tactics faster than in any other industry. I wanted my thesis to emphasize the essentiality of adapting sports marketing strategies to resonate with diverse generations, as data has shown that the Gen Z and Gen Alpha are not interested in spectator sports in the same ways earlier generations were. The digital realm does not only amplify engagement but it also plays an indespensable role in shaping a venue's identity as a sports destination. In an age where sports enthusiasts are more connected than ever, understanding the intricate relationship between digital marketing and sports legacy is more essential than ever before. Overall, I wanted to highlight the importance of building lasting relationships that go beyond the playing field in order to foster a legacy that continues long after the final whistle. The digital era definitely presents challenges for those responsible for marketing sporting events and venues (thinking of myself here!) but case studies in the field have already paved the way to the right path of doing so (I wrote dozens of pages to prove it 😉). I learned a lot since I started this research journey but one thing became clearer the more data I collected and the more specialists I spoke to: The more you think you learned about digital marketing, the more there is to learn about digital marketing. ⛳ As the sports world preps for the PGA Championship this week, it’s got me thinking about what conference organizers can take from the sports world. Here’s an idea: The Step & Repeat & Press Row Major sporting events utilize a step and repeat backdrop after each match for several strategic reasons: 🏆 Sponsorship and Brand Exposure 🏆 Media Efficiency 🏆 Consistent Branding 🏆 Fan Engagement 🏆 Commercial Value Overall, the step and repeat is a crucial tool for event organizers to manage media interactions efficiently while maximizing commercial opportunities and brand visibility associated with the event. Here’s how it works in championship golf: 1️⃣ Player finishes a round 2️⃣ If it’s a final round, the Player is quickly interviewed by one primary host/interviewer.  - Content is streamed around the world.  3️⃣ Player is then ushered to the main step and repeat where they are interviewed by a select group of interviewers.  - Content is streamed on a virtual media hub for hundreds of pre-vetted press and bloggers around the world.  4️⃣ Player then is ushered to a few individual interview areas to have further one on one conversations with select press. - Content is leveraged by the individual outlets in a variety of formats. 5️⃣ Then they go sign autographs and chat with the fans I realize what you’re thinking: a lot of this is to try and get the immediate emotional and physical reaction to what just occurred. Here's how it could work in championship speaking: 🎙 Speaker or Speakers finish their talk. Big applause 🎙 An MC interviews them with a few follow on questions from their talk (10-15 Minutes) For example: Imagine if Josh Shepard of Atlassian did a talk at Dreamforce on how events are becoming a more critical aspect of Atlassian’s Global marketing and community strategy and how they are using tech to enable that. Then he steps off stage to be interviewed by Julius Solaris, Dahlia El Gazzar, Vinney Polito, Liz Irving or some other knowledgeable event marketing expert that can break down their talk even deeper. 🎙 The speaker is then ushered to the main step and repeat where they can chat with a select group of other hosts, sponsors or attendees. (10-15 Minutes) Of course all of his content could be streamed live or recorded and attached to the main talk for future video distribution or used on social.
