During #WomensHistoryMonth, we are spotlighting some of the amazing women who work at #SKDK, #Sloane, and #Jasper and their accomplishments. Carly R. is an Associate at Sloane & Company, based in New York, working across a broad range of industries, with a strong focus on media relations and corporate communications.    Prior to joining Sloane, Carly was an Account Executive at BCW Global in its New York Corporate Affairs practice where she specialized in public affairs and crises and issues management, working with a wide range of clients across highly regulated industries, including pharmaceutical, food and beverage, consumer packaged goods, communications infrastructure and more. Born and raised in Florida, Carly graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations and a minor in Communication Studies. Currently, she serves on the Board of Directors for the New York Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA-NY) as Vice President, Big Apple Awards.   What does Women’s History Month mean to you?   Women’s History Month is a time for us to celebrate and remember the contributions and achievements of women throughout history and honor their resiliency and commitment to progress and equality.    Specifically, for us in PR, Women's History Month holds special significance because it provides an opportunity to celebrate trailblazing women who have shaped the field. Additionally, it is a reminder of the importance of diversity and inclusion within our industry and how we must elevate women from all backgrounds and experiences.   What advice do you have for younger women in the workplace?   This is something that I struggle with, but do not be afraid to speak up and take up space. You deserve a seat at the table just as much as everyone else, and most of the time they are genuinely interested and grateful for your input and perspective! Let go of the idea of perfectionism and allow yourself grace when you make mistakes—that’s how you grow.    Tell us about a woman leader you admire and why?   I have always really admired female entrepreneurs who are passionate and willing to take risks. Sara Blakely, Founder of SPANX, is a great example of this; she transformed a brilliant concept—a versatile, slimming undergarment that challenged similar options available at the time—into not just a career, but an empire. From her humble beginnings as a full-time salesperson working on her product late at night out of a spare apartment bedroom, she worked to grow the company into what it is today: a $1.2 billion business with products used by millions of women across the globe. Her story exemplifies entrepreneurship, determination and the power of believing in yourself and your ideas.

Dear #WomenAtWork Re: Women’s History Month How is it AT WORK women are empowered, equipped and trusted to manage people, teams, projects, departments, divisions, products, services, programs, agenda, launches, business units, budgets, P&L …. but not trusted to make decisions about her body? Is it possible to celebrate women’s history month AT WORK when there is a national outcry for women’s right to body autonomy? Is it possible to celebrate women’s history month at the same time take away the right for women to choose for themselves? How do you respect women as history makers at the same time not respect women’s right to make their own decisions about their own body? We can no longer separate external factors from internal corporate culture when the expectation is to bring your best self to work. Best self means full self…. Is anyone talking about this? Thoughts? Anne Schmitt, director of content based in our Chicago office, shared her thoughts: “The celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day spurs me to think about the progress women have made since I started my career, and the work left to do to make sure my two daughters and other young women entering the workforce can create the lives and careers they want. On the positive side, there are so many more visible role models today for women in leadership roles in all walks of life, including business. There are fewer assumptions made about women’s interests and ambitions. Collectively, we’re much more supportive of women — and men — balancing their home and work commitments. Still, there is work to do to increase opportunities for women, whether that’s increasing the pipeline of women to the very highest leadership positions, making sure women are at the table when business or social issues are being discussed and decided, or ensuring all parents in the workplace have the support they need to manage their competing demands. That’s why the ‘Inspire Inclusion’ message of International Women’s Day resonates with me. Each of us can contribute to creating a more inclusive world that empowers women, creates a real sense of belonging and provides opportunities for them to make the impact they want on the world.” #WomensHistoryMonth #InspireInclusion

As we near the end of Women’s History Month, there is a timely, albeit unfortunate, politicization happening around diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. Of course, DEI practices and how we implement them have been a debated topic for sometime now, but don’t we all have differing ideas on how to put MOST policies into practice? In fact, in most cases, it’s the diversity in ideas of how to put policies into practice that make each business uniquely successful or unsuccessful. With respect to the debate being brought into the eye of mainstream conversations right now, and being politicized as part of the upcoming presidential election, it’s important to remember a couple of things that are, in my opinion as a workforce management professional who speaks to dozens, if not hundreds, of businesses a year, just simple truths… 1. DEI is fundamentally a practice of equitably involving ANY underrepresented or marginalized group. The fact that it has become politicized to hyper-focus on one and openly criticize and/or dismiss one group in particular is, ironically, proof that it’s needed in the first place. 2. As a business owner, leader, employee, etc., if you don’t understand that diversity in perspective, ideas, and thought are critical for growth and success, then you’re doomed to fail🤷🏻♂️ Throughout the entirety of human history, the largest periods of growth have come from cultural defusion. Whether that’s through trade, assimilation, or any other form of coming together and exchanging ideas, practices, etc. The essence of innovation is bringing something new to the table. And even though innovation has become a white noise buzz word, it’s been at the root of the rise or downfall of major businesses, i.e. Amazon vs. Sears. Working hard to get where you’re at is great and I whole heartedly believe it’s an important part of being successful. But if you don’t believe other people have fundamentally unique experiences, then you don’t believe that you have fundamentally unique experiences, and you ironically devalue your own worth when you devalue others. I hope that as we close out Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate all of the amazing contributions women have brought to all aspects of life via THEIR unique experiences, we can remember to drown out all of the noise and value ALL members of our society, and that DEI is simply a tool to make sure we value everyone and continue to grow and be successful. #DEI #diversityequityandinclusion #womenshistory #womenshistorymonth #diversity #equity #inclusion #politics #foodforthought #innovation #tech #business #leadership #HR #humanresources #policy #policies
