Research shows that LGBTQ+ populations are more likely to experience mental health illness, including suicidal ideation. In a Q&A with Ingenovis Health for Pride Month, Patrick Decker-Tonnesen, Ph.D. articulates a poignant truth concerning the LGBTQ+ community within healthcare environments: "LGBTQ+ community members are often forced to wear masks or hide their identities—sometimes for their entire lives for their mental and physical well-being and safety. This makes the interactions between LGBTQ+ providers and patients that much more important." This statement underscores a critical issue—the dire need for authentic representation and understanding in healthcare. The significance of fostering inclusive environments where patients and providers alike can openly express their identities cannot be overstated. To wrap up Pride Month, I just want to remind everyone that members of the LGBTQ+ community tend to have very different experiences with the US healthcare system than non-community members. Not only is access more difficult, they also tend to have more negative experiences with providers. If you're a provider, consider how you can make your practice more LGBTQ+ friendly! Educate yourself and staff on different genders, sexualities, and terminology, customize your intake forms, create a visually welcoming environment (E.G. putting out LGBTQ+ health brochures), and avoid making assumptions. Everyone makes mistakes. Don't aim for perfection—aim for growth and learning! By making yourself a welcoming provider, you contribute to the health of the LGBTQ+ population at large. #PrideMonth #Healthcare #LGBTQ #LGBTQHealth

🌈 Happy Pride Month! 🌈 This month, we celebrate and spread awareness of the LGBTQ+ community in the workplace and their mental health. Did you know: - 31% of LGBTQ+ individuals have faced discrimination and micro-incidents at work. - 85% of employees believe that a diverse and inclusive workforce is crucial for driving innovation. - Using a trans young person's correct name and pronouns can reduce symptoms of depression by 71%, thoughts of suicide by 34%, and suicide attempts by 65%. - 1 in 4 people in the LGBTQ+ community have left a job because they didn’t feel accepted. Remember, your words matter! 🗣 When it comes to using the right terminology, we know that most people don't have bad intentions. But the more inclusive we can be, the better everyone will feel. Being mindful of our daily language can make us more aware and encourage reflection on how we can embrace everyone. 🫶 🏳️🌈 #pridemonth #LGBTQ #inclusiveworkplaces #mentalhealthmatters #yourwordsmatter

Did you know that LGBTQ+ people face significant gaps in receiving adequate mental health and healthcare? Gaps in health insurance coverage, economic injustice, discrimination, bias, stigma, and violence all interact to worsen the health challenges facing LGBTQ+ people today. 🌟 On May 7, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, released the 2024 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). The HEI is the leading national benchmarking tool for LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and best practices in healthcare facilities. 🌈 Check it out to learn how you and your organization can promote equitable and inclusive care for LGBTQ+ people and their families https://lnkd.in/dQrCAAr.

Featured Community Commons Library: LGBTQ+ Health Equity Library LGBTQ+ people belong everywhere. They deserve to live open, authentic lives without fear of discrimination, harassment, judgement, or violence. Despite decades of tireless advocacy, however, LGBTQ+ people still experience disproportionately worse health outcomes, endure ongoing discrimination, and are four times more likely to experience violence than their straight and cisgender peers. These disparities are often further compounded by isolation and a lack of access to appropriate primary and mental health care. The LGBTQ+ Health Equity Library highlights dozens of newly-curated resources and stories to advance equitable health outcomes for queer and gender-expansive individuals and the LGBTQ+ community as a whole. Happy Pride Month! 🌈 Pride Month for LGBTQ+ honors the progress made for equal rights and treatment. It also allows time for reflection on the systemic oppression and injustice that still impact LGBTQ+ folks. Inequity harms mental health, and the LGBTQ+ community faces higher rates of mental health struggles due to stigma, discrimination, and bias. Prioritizing self-care—such as connecting with supportive friends, practicing mindfulness, and seeking professional help—is essential for resilience and well-being. Here are some ways to build resiliency and support your friends, coworkers and family. Let's continue to recognize and address these issues every day, not just in June. #PrideMonth #LGBTQ+ #MentalHealth #BetteringLives

Recent research shows that LGBTQ+ couples are more likely to foster or adopt than straight couples, but many have concerns about discrimination they may face during the process. The survey also shows that more than a third of LGBTQ+ Americans have fear as a significant barrier to attempting to foster or adopt, while just 10% of non-LGBTQ+ adults share a similar view. It is essential to remove negative stereotypes about LGBTQ+ families and provide anti-bias training and curriculum to mandatory reporters and caseworkers to encourage adoption and fostering.
