"Africa is diverse with different complexities. Recognizing each country's context ensures that we can support smallholder farmers differently and attract more funding to improve their success rate. For instance, in Uganda, we have leveraged this understanding of context to support smallholder farmers by setting up solar stations to power key centers that help farmers prepare and preserve their produce for the market. Doing this creates stability and derisks the farmers and cooperatives, making them more attractive to private sector and financial institutions. This framework, along with collaboration with governments and the private sector, is key to driving economic empowerment." – William Matovu, Country Director for Heifer International Uganda and Africa Country Strategy Lead for Heifer International, speaking live on the panel “Advancing Agriculture: Africa’s New Harvest – The Agricultural Revolution” at AFSIC - Investing in Africa 2024 Follow Heifer International Africa for more updates. #HeiferAfrica #AFSIC2024 #SmallholderFarmers #Agriculture #InnovativeSolutions

𝑵𝙤𝒓𝙩𝒉𝙚𝒓𝙣 𝙆𝒆𝙣𝒚𝙖 𝘾𝒐𝙪𝒏𝙩𝒊𝙚𝒔 𝑶𝙛𝒇𝙚𝒓 𝑨𝙩𝒕𝙧𝒂𝙘𝒕𝙞𝒗𝙚 𝙄𝒏𝙫𝒆𝙨𝒕𝙢𝒆𝙣𝒕 𝑶𝙥𝒑𝙤𝒓𝙩𝒖𝙣𝒊𝙩𝒊𝙚𝒔 A recent study by Interpeace, an international peace-building organization, has identified significant investment opportunities in Northern Kenya's frontier markets. The research, which focused on Elgeyo Marakwet, Mandera, and Marsabit counties, reveals that these areas are endowed with abundant natural and artificial resources, including agriculture, livestock, fisheries, trade, infrastructure, storage and transport, renewable energy, services, manufacturing, mining, and tourism The counties' strategic location, bordering Somalia and Ethiopia, provides vast cross-border market opportunities. Principal Secretary Teresia Mbaika emphasized that sustainable public-private investment partnerships can unlock these resources, mitigate social and conflict risks, and create a cycle of stability and long-term prosperity. Key investment areas include: 🐮 🌿 Agriculture and Livestock: Mandera and Marsabit offer notable peace-positive investment potential in livestock production and agriculture. 🏢 Infrastructure: Marsabit presents significant opportunities for large infrastructure projects, including water management and energy investments. 🐟 Fisheries: The fisheries sector around Lake Turkana offers significant peace-positive investment potential, with investments needed in cold chain facilities, fish landing sites, and market outlets. Ambassador Amina Mohammed highlighted the importance of inclusive investment strategies, noting that integrating peace efforts into investment frameworks can mitigate risks, enhance returns, and contribute to a peaceful and prosperous Northern Kenya. #InvestInNorthernKenya #PeacePositiveInvestment #AfricanEconomicGrowth #InfrastructureDevelopment #AgriculturalInvestment #FisheriesSector #RenewableEnergy #TourismInvestment #KenyaEconomy

Africa's agriculture sector is at a critical crossroads. Despite employing over 60% of the continent's workforce and contributing nearly 25% to its GDP, financing remains a significant hurdle. Only about 3% of total bank lending is directed toward agriculture. How can we bridge this gap and accelerate the transformation of the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Africa? Today at the AFS Forum Heifer Dealroom session, "Reinventing Financing: Fit-for-Purpose Financing for Transforming Food Systems," experts and stakeholders are exploring innovative and blended finance strategies to mobilize private capital and foster sustainable agricultural practices. With an astonishing 65% of the global uncultivated arable land situated in Africa, this partnership holds immense promise not only for the continent's self-sufficiency but also for its potential to contribute significantly to global food production. Through long-term financing commitments and capacity-building initiatives for young scientists and agricultural workers, the partnership aims to amplify the impact of CGIAR's regional centers across Africa. The fund aims to bring Brazilian expertise in agricultural technologies to Africa, not only to enhance food sustainability but also to support export capabilities. Currently, Africa primarily exports raw materials, but it’s time to shift toward adding value to our resources.
