🌍 **Reflecting on 29 Years of COP: Progress, Missed Targets, and the Urgency of Now** 🌍 This year marks the 29th anniversary of the Conference of the Parties (COP), which began as a landmark initiative to unite global efforts in combating climate change. The aspirations were clear: **to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable development** to safeguard the planet for future generations. Is it going to be Similar Talks or Have a real deal? Over the years, COP has seen some notable achievements: ✅ *Global Climate Agreements*: The Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement set legally binding targets, holding nations accountable. ✅ *Rising Awareness*: COP has elevated climate discussions to the forefront, driving awareness and commitment from governments, businesses, and individuals worldwide. ✅ *Technological Advancements*: We’ve seen innovations in clean energy, carbon capture, and sustainable practices, with more companies integrating ESG principles. However, we've also faced significant setbacks: ❌ *Emissions Are Still Rising*: Despite commitments, many countries have not met their emissions targets. CO₂ levels and fossil fuel use continue to increase. ❌ *Slow Implementation*: Ambitious pledges often lack the actionable plans or resources needed for real impact, stalling progress. ❌ *Disproportionate Impacts*: Vulnerable populations and ecosystems are experiencing the harshest effects, highlighting the need for more inclusive climate solutions. **Why Now?** The effects of climate change are no longer a distant threat. Rising sea levels, extreme weather, and loss of biodiversity are intensifying, posing immediate risks to economies, communities, and ecosystems. The window to limit global warming to 1.5°C is closing rapidly, making immediate, coordinated action essential. 🌐 *It’s time for governments, businesses, and individuals to shift from pledges to tangible actions*. Integrating sustainable practices, innovating for resilience, and prioritizing our planet’s health are not just aspirations—they’re imperatives. Let’s make the next 26 years a testament to meaningful change. #COP29 #ClimateAction #Sustainability #ESG #PlanetSustech

“It’s time for governments, businesses, and individuals to shift from pledges to tangible actions “ .. this does not mean anything unless we have a legally binding framework such as .. retrospectively applying ‘cross default’ clause on .. respective government bond and/or loan exposures ( loan market associations documents ) with a targeted GHG emissions (a transparent emission reduction for next 3-5 year @1.5 degree scenario) and a efficient rollout of crossboder Tax regime ‘Carbon Tax’ .. of course Regulators , Banks including Large Investment firms ( holding trillions of dollars - asset under management) to be monitored for Tangible transitions and effective Pillar 1 Capital for all level of emissions !

The #UN #Climate #Change Conference (#COP29) in #Baku, #Azerbaijan, has been marked by several notable outcomes and discussions to address urgent global climate issues. Key points of progress and negotiations from COP29 so far include: 1. #Climate #Financing for #Developing #Nations: There is an emphasis on scaling Financial support for developing countries to enhance climate resilience and clean energy transitions. The Green Climate Fund, established in 2009, originally targeted $100 billion per year by 2020. COP29 discussions have focused on defining a new funding goal to succeed this, with UN experts estimating actual needs at around $2.4 trillion annually until 2030 2.#Updated #National #Climate #Pledges: Following the 2015 Paris Agreement, each country was tasked with establishing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for reducing emissions. COP29 is urging countries to strengthen these pledges to keep global warming within 1.5°C. However, current commitments suggest a potential increase of up to 2.9°C, underscoring the gap between current efforts and required targets 3.#Transition #from #Fossil #Fuels: #COP29 has continued the discussion on moving away from fossil fuel dependency. While COP28's language avoided an outright call for fossil fuel "phase-out," COP29 is exploring pathways to accelerate a "just transition" to renewable energy sources while maintaining socioeconomic stability 4. #Enhanced #Support for #Indigenous and #Vulnerable #Communities: Recognizing that climate change disproportionately impacts indigenous and vulnerable communities, COP29 has prioritized initiatives to protect biodiversity and traditional practices. This approach aims to integrate climate resilience with social justice principles. 5. #Youth and #NGO #Participation: #COP29 has seen active engagement from youth activists, NGOs, and local organizations, particularly in the Green Zone, where these groups advocate for stronger climate actions and hold events to raise awareness on climate issues. These outcomes reflect both achievements and ongoing challenges as global leaders work to intensify efforts against climate change and seek consensus on transformative action plans. #COP29 is expected to continue advancing discussions on climate finance and policy commitments, with final outcomes to be confirmed by the conference's conclusion on #November 22. #COP29 #ClimateAction #Sustainability #GlobalUnity #ClimateFinance #RenewableEnergy #Biodiversity #YouthForClimate #ClimateJustice #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateLeadership #NetZero #CarbonNeutrality #FutureOfOurPlanet #GreenInnovation #ClimateSolutions ENEN Green EWE EcoWealthEarth

Yunus Arikan at the #UNFCCC #COP29 LGMA Press Conference in Baku said it well “you may have noticed that the negotiations are suspended in the other room but the climate emergency and climate action is continuing, daily.” Are you looking for ways to scale-up #ClimateAction in your own community? Why not lead a group activity to gather people for exchanging ideas and joining forces to implement local projects and initiatives? The #EuropeanClimatePact gives us a few ideas to get started at https://lnkd.in/eu8-zsRE The importance of positive examples and stories to catalyze action and raise ambition cannot be understated. Why not showcase sustainable practices from your neighborhood or your own projects and initiatives and jointly seek ways to replicate and scale them up? While our hearts are with the people in southern and eastern Spain affected by the devastating floods just a few days ago, scientists are telling us that such extreme weather events are exacerbated by climate change and will continue to grow in frequency and intensity as global temperature rises. However, the commitments that national governments have made so far to curb climate change are still insufficient: this year’s synthesis report by the UNFCCC secretariat shows that current national climate plans (NDCs) are still dangerously off-track to avert the crippling effects of climate change. https://lnkd.in/ey97abKW Local action by civil society is crucial to drive governments to raise the level of ambition of their national climate plans or NDCs (nationally determined contribution under the Paris Agreement). By 2025, countries are to update their NDC and raise their level of ambition - the UNFCCC COP 30 in Brazil next year will be the moment of truth. I had the privilege to be part of the civil society organizations present at the UNFCCC #COP21 in Paris back in 2015 when the #Paris Agreement was approved. It was a beautiful historic moment when leaders in government and in the multilateral negotiation process, with strong presence and support from civil society, including sub-national governments, were united in calling for a global agreement on climate. It was the culmination of a long arduous path and work by many people, organizations and governments across the globe… it was magnificent! In the path to #COP30, we need to build this momentum again and more, or we will all loose to the dangerous impacts of climate change. Best wishes to the colleagues and friends at COP29! #myworldourplanet #euclimatepact #ClimateAction #ClimateChange

How can the world's nations discuss funding the 2030 plan at COP29 without involving global companies that have the largest share of consuming natural resources? The meetings of nations are turning into a global conversation, while the solution must be comprehensive and require active participation from all concerned parties to achieve sustainable development goals. It is imperative to mandate that global companies contribute a certain percentage to the funding of the 2030 plan. It is not reasonable for global companies to thrive on the world's wealth without bearing part of the cost of repairing the planet. #COP29 #ClimateAction #SustainableDevelopment #GlobalGoals #ClimateCrisis #ClimateFinance #GreenFuture #EcoFriendly #RenewableEnergy #ClimateJustice #2030Agenda #ClimateChange #COP29Baku #ClimateConference #NatureNow

The Weight of Responsibility at COPs Credits to Antonio Díaz Aranda. Follow him for more sustainability content. Original post: __________ What weight does each country carry at the COP? The Biodiversity COP (COP16) begins today and the Climate Change COP (COP26) in 3 weeks Spaces in which all countries have a voice but in which this voice carries an unequal burden. Some countries travel light to conferences (a carry-on and a mandate to follow) while others travel with the weight of disasters, accelerated loss of resources, and compounded social problems. For some it is a business issue, while for others it is a survival issue. Let's remember that at COPs many voices are heard, but few are heard. __________ ♻️ Find this post useful?
