Yesterday, I witnessed something truly inspiring: Over 100 cyclists embarking on one of the longest endurance bike rides in Africa. What struck me most wasn’t just the scale of the challenge—over 1,800 km in two weeks—but their pure excitement and dedication. They’re not doing this for themselves, but to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives and honor the legacy of Tanzania’s founding fathers. It made me pause and reflect: When was the last time I truly gave back to my community? Not through one-time donations or acts of charity, but by dedicating my time and effort to touch lives meaningfully? I remembered when I finished university, my father encouraged me to volunteer at a local primary school where he served as a board member. The school had a shortage of teachers, so I spent a full year teaching, unpaid. That experience gave me so much more than any paycheck ever could—it felt incredible to be part of the solution. These cyclists are doing something equally powerful. Over the next two weeks, they will plant 5,000 trees and donate desks across 12 regions in Tanzania, blending their love for cycling with a mission to create lasting change. Some of these cyclists are young teenagers, others are older, but all are united by one purpose. YB has a special mission: The goal is to collect 100,000 football shoes for children in South Africa, providing them with opportunities for physical activity and joy. ⚽👟 In Germany, an estimated 2.3 million football shoes are sold annually. Many are discarded after brief use, often ending up unused in our basements or storage rooms. Yet, for many children in South Africa, football shoes are an unreachable dream – a dream we can fulfill together. Here's how you can help: 1. Used football shoes are collected locally by clubs, youth academies, private households, and other supporters. From these various collection points, the shoes must be stored regionally and later transported to a central collection point in Hamburg. 2. On May 5th, a group of eight Buro Happold employees (including myself 🤩) will be traveling to the Karongi district in Rwanda for two weeks to build a 62m suspension bridge across the Mashyiga River working closely together with the local community and Bridges to Prosperity. We are fundraising money for this important project and are seeking all the help we can find. We just started a “Sponsor Kilometers” campaign where every team member has dedicated to reach as many kilometres as possible in April – whether it be running, cycling, or walking. During the rainy season, life can be hard for the Mubuga-Nyarunyinya community who rely on crossing the river to reach an array of critical resources like the school, health center and markets. Most people turn back during the rainy season and don't even attempt, or let their children attempt to cross. As a result, children don’t attend school and people don’t have access to healthcare. The Cyamatare Suspended Bridge will provide safe, year-round access for the surrounding communities, serving access to critical resources to around 9,000 people. Bridges to Prosperity seeks to create transformational change and resilience in communities by providing last mile connectivity to combat rural isolation. Trail bridges can increase school attendance among girls by 200%, increase farm profits in the communities by 75%, and increase vaccination rates by 45%. We’re working with #JKUAT to ensure that the physiotherapy and occupational therapy students studying there have the knowledge, skills, and approach needed to assess and individually fit people with wheelchairs and train them to use them well.
