Voi Technology has just hit an incredible milestone in Stockholms stad, the city where our journey began in 2018 🛴 💚 On June 23, 2024, we celebrated our 🎉 20 millionth ride 🎉 in this vibrant city. The ride was taken by one of our loyal users who has been with us for 2.5 years, marking their 277th ride. Did you know? Stockholm is not just our hometown; it's a global leader in sustainable urban mobility! Here are some fun facts: 🌍 Stockholm’s ambitious climate targets: The city aims to be fossil fuel-free by 2040, striving for a greener, cleaner future for all its residents. And while car-use slightly decreased in 2023, there is a lot more to be done to reach this target together. 🚲 Bike-friendly city: Stockholm boasts over 760 kilometers of bike lanes, making it one of the most bike- and e-scooter friendly cities in the world. This network allows thousands of cyclists and e-scooter riders to navigate the city safely and efficiently every day. 🚗 Car-free city center: Stockholm has announced a groundbreaking plan to transform part of its city center into a car-free zone. Starting from December 31 a 20-block area will only permit zero-emission vehicles while banning petrol and diesel cars entirely. This initiative aims to drastically reduce air pollution and noise, creating a healthier environment for residents and visitors alike. Exciting news! Amsterdam claims the #2 spot on the Urban Mobility Readiness Index! 🏆 📈 Climbing 4 spots, the city's outstanding cycling infrastructure and innovative EV solutions are key to this success. The study by Oliver Wyman Forum & University of California, Berkeley analysed 65 cities globally, looking at categories such as public transit, economic pressures, clean energy fuel and sustainability. 🚲🌱 This acknowledgement highlights Amsterdam's ability to provide conference delegates with smart and safe transportation options for easy exploration of the city in an eco-friendly manner. 🚇 Amsterdam remains committed to future progress, including plans to reduce car ownership, enhance public transport and widen pedestrian spaces. Imagine a safe, sustainable city without car dominance. I came across, together with Daniel Bumann an inspiring poster in Biel, Switzerland and I looked it up. The website is available in German and French and it describes many of the solutions for "How do we get there?" - the vision for car-free cities. The vibrant and inspiring illustrated map (same as the front page) links the solutions for sustainable city, from 15-minute city to car-pooling and so on. Copenhagen, the vibrant capital of Denmark, is a shining example of how embracing clean transportation can transform a city. ✨ Once choked by car traffic and air pollution, it has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis, earning the title of "world's most bicycle-friendly city." In the 1960s, Copenhagen experienced a surge in car ownership, leading to congestion, noise, and air pollution. Public health suffered, and the city's livability declined. Recognizing the need for change, city planners embarked on a bold vision: prioritize pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport, creating a car-free, sustainable city center. A multi-pronged approach was implemented: 🚴♂️ Cycling infrastructure: An extensive network of bike lanes, separated from traffic, was built, encouraging cycling for everyday commutes. 🚃 Public transport: Investments in efficient metros, buses, and trams provided convenient and affordable alternatives to cars. 🚓 Car restrictions: Congestion charges and car-free zones discouraged non-essential car use in the city center. 🚶♀️ Pedestrian-friendly spaces: Wide sidewalks, plazas, and green spaces prioritized pedestrians, creating a more pleasant and vibrant atmosphere. 🚀 The transformation has been remarkable: Cycling: Over 60% of Copenhageners now commute by bike, reducing traffic congestion and pollution significantly. Air quality: Air pollution has been drastically reduced, making Copenhagen one of the cleanest cities in Europe. Health and well-being: Increased physical activity and reduced pollution have led to improved public health and quality of life. Economy: The shift to clean transportation has attracted businesses and tourists, boosting the city's economy. Copenhagen's success story has inspired cities worldwide to adopt similar strategies. 🧐 Experts: It's paramount for Tallinn to become a cycling-friendly city! 🤷♂️ Citizens: Sorry, not possible in our climate zone! Back in the 1970s, Copenhagen started cutting back on car-centric areas, and there was an expected pushback 😤. People argued, "In our climate, biking simply is not practical. Also, summers are short so we don't lounge in cafes like people in Italy. It's just not possible." The same groundless arguments have existed ever so greatly in Tallinn. "Our climate is not like in Amsterdam". As it's said by someone wise - for every solutions, there's a problem 👎 Fast forward, Copenhagen is now a city where 62% ride bicycles 🤯. These aren't some enthusiasts and extremists. They are regular Danes who prefer easiest ways to get around the city. Somehow, Copenhagen's climate is now favourable 🤔 Fact is, in any city that prioritizes pedestrians or cyclists over cars, folks choose car-free movement. Don't believe the citizens of Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo and many others? The Nordic countries are role models for sustainability, with the biggest country in the north, Sweden, being the region’s exemplar to follow. Sweden’s second biggest city, Gothenburg, has topped the ranking for the world’s most sustainable cities several years in a row. Gothenburg, which was once called “a courtyard to hell”, has since the mid-1980s gradually infused sustainability into every aspect of its urban life. An important factor in the city’s sustainable strategy is the establishment of the ‘Green Zone’, where the innovations and testing of fully emissions-free and climate-neutral transportation systems occur. Thorough electrification of transportation and construction has been the focus, as well as a district cooling system that combines surplus heat and Gothenburg’s river water to provide residents with an energy-efficient, cost-competitive alternative to conventional air conditioning. Gothenburg has also made it easy for cyclists and pedestrians, with dedicated bike lanes and bike-sharing programs, and pedestrian-friendly zones. This not only promotes a healthier lifestyle but also reduces traffic congestion and emissions. Gothenburg's success is rooted in collaboration. Public-private partnerships, community engagement, and innovative solutions are key ingredients in the city's sustainability recipe. Gothenburg continues to lead by example with a collaborative spirit and open innovation. 🥇Helsinki, Amsterdam, and Stockholm have been acknowledged as leading cities in urban transportation and recognised as key players in the future of urban mobility. 🚲 According to a study by the Oliver Wyman Forum and University of California, Berkeley, these cities stand out for their robust public transit systems, significant investments in cycling infrastructure, and a commitment to transitioning to sustainable energy sources. 🌟 Cities were given credit for car-free zones and extensive cycling networks, with European cities like Amsterdam leading the way. The density of public transit stations, extensiveness of transport networks and the quality of roads were also taken into account. 🚶One primary focus of the study was to debunk the myth that a city’s transportation landscape is permanent.
