As global humanitarian centres in Geneva, New York, and Brussels foster crucial dialogues, it's imperative that voices from national NGOs and civil society organisations (CSOs) are included. Yet, many smaller organisations, particularly those from the Global South, face barriers to engagement due to limited resources and geographical distance. Consequently, many challenges to comprehensive inclusion persist, hindering diverse representation and meaningful participation. To address this, as part of NGO Advocacy Working Group, INTERSOS and Care have collaborated with other stakeholders to develop a set of guidelines to facilitate the physical participation of local organisations in international events. These guidelines aim to bridge the gap, ensuring that voices from the frontlines of humanitarian crises are heard and valued. The paper aims to provide clear guidance to NGOs seeking to enhance physical participation and inclusion of CSOs and national NGOs in international panel discussions, roundtables, and other events. It outlines key challenges and provides recommended steps to address them. By promoting greater participation, we advance the principles of localisation and Accountability to Affected People (AAP), empowering smaller organisations to shape humanitarian discourse and action. International HDP Conference in Bonn On October 19-20, an international conference on the Humanitarian–Development–Peace (HDP) nexus takes place in Bonn, hosted by the bicc - Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies. The HDP nexus, introduced at the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit, represents a "new way of working" for UN agencies, international organizations, and NGOs. It promotes conflict sensitivity, prevention, and encourages actors in humanitarian, development, and peace sectors to collaborate on peacebuilding initiatives. This conference represents the culmination of an in-depth research project examining the local implementation of the HDP nexus in Mali, South Sudan, and Iraq. Malteser International contributed with a case study focused on South Sudan. "The study and participation in the workshops organized by BICC helped us reflect on our peacebuilding approaches and expand our learning," says Roland Hansen, Head of Malteser International’s Africa Department. "The research provided a deeper understanding of the region's complex conflict dynamics and showed how important it is to study from the bottom up including all stakeholders. It also expanded our perspective on decolonization within the HDP Nexus framework." At the conference, findings from the study will be shared with representatives from politics, academia, and practitioners, placing the results within a broader global context. We extend our gratitude to BICC and the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) for making this important study possible, and to the International Rescue Committee and Welthungerhilfe (WHH) , for their valuable insights. #HDPN2024 #bicc_HDPN #DevelopmentAid #HumanitarianAid #MalteserInternational

Climate Change & Human Mobility | Human Rights | Advocacy | Nexus Humanitarian - Development - Peace
One month after the vote on the so-called "asylum - immigration" law in France, and in the wake of the march for freedom, equality, and fraternity that took place across France, the summit of the Global Forum for Migration and Development, chaired by France, opens. Although it is customary for the summit to be held in the country holding the presidency, France has chosen to end its term at the head of this international process in Geneva, from 23 to 25 January 2024. The GFMD is supposed to be a forum for multilateral dialogue designed to move away from a security-based approach to migration by taking account sustainable development considerations. Yet, today, civil society raised their concerns with the shrinking space it is allocated in this space. Concrete and sustainable action that respects fundamental #humanrights cannot be created and implemented if the voices and knowledge of civil society organisations, the youth, and diasporas, are not meaningfully taken into account. The priority theme of this summit, which is being held shortly after #COP28, is "the impact of climate change on human mobility". We will push for innovative and courageous dialogue and solutions to (1) tackle the structural causes of #climatechange, (2) Ensure adaptation strategies, co-constructed with impacted communities, are implemented so migrations result from a choice and not a necessity, (3) create safe, legal and flexible migration pathways for people on the move due to climate change and environmental degradation.
