During #MIGlobal 2024, our health team launched key initiatives and highlighted ongoing programmatic work in more than two dozen panels featuring leaders across industries and sectors. They discussed a variety of critical health-related topics, including the need for simplified and accessible clinical trials for diverse patients and clinicians in various settings. Patient engagement throughout the product development life cycle—from design to evidence generation—is important for ensuring treatments meet patients’ needs. Building trust with diverse communities is vital for successful clinical research that is generalizable to all populations and requires long-term community engagement and addressing historical harms. Involving underserved communities in all stages of research, from question formulation to dissemination of results, is essential for addressing health disparities. In December, the Nova Annual Conference brought together leaders and experts across fields to explore the many interconnected factors that influence health and vitality. Collaborations formed in real time as scientists, researchers, and even artisans came together to explore topics such as food and nutrition, corporate accountability, well-being economies, and how to overcome barriers that limit the exposure of their important work. "Together, in real-time, strands are woven. Questions arise, with answers that might be obtained by novel research or critical policy approaches. The tapestry of health emerges." We are at the very dawn of the reality of precision health. Guaranteed this happens within our lifetimes. It’s accelerating faster than most people realize and the inflection is unlike anything we’ve ever seen in the delivery and maintenance of human health throughout history. This will be the century of biology. It’s complex though. Are we asking the right questions? Do we have the right tools to ask these questions at scale? Can we understand what the answers mean (the “so what”)? and then, most importantly, can we actually deliver it. The last one is the hardest piece.

What will it take to make precision health a global reality? This month, Nature Medicine presents a special Focus dedicated to precision health. As healthcare becomes increasingly data-driven and precise, we ask what it means to deliver precision health — that is, the tailoring of preventive or treatment approaches to groups or individuals on the basis of certain characteristics — in different geographical and clinical contexts. This issue includes a variety of news, opinion, review and original research articles on critical areas and challenges that must be addressed to make precision health a global reality. 🚫 The Harsh Reality: My team made a groundbreaking discovery, identifying specific patients who would 100% respond to a particular cancer drug. This should have been a triumph for precision health, a step toward personalized treatment. Instead, the marketing team chose to pull the diagnostic tool that could have ensured precise treatment, all to avoid a potential $1 billion annual loss in sales. Precision medicine, with its potential to revolutionize healthcare, remains a distant dream as long as financial gains take precedence over patient well-being. #precisionhealth #precisionmedicine
