Another pair of ferries are slated to become electric, courtesy of work to be done by Echandia "Echandia’s advanced battery systems are installed to significantly reduce both fossil fuel emissions and fuel costs. The battery systems are designed to meet the customer’s requirement for a 10-year lifespan, which Echandia’s systems can achieve. Echandia said the main reasons its battery systems were chosen for this prestigious project are their long lifespan, high safety and because they require roughly half the installation space compared with other systems." Conversion work like this will bring new technical expertise for various stakeholders. And battery powered ferries mean more efficient, greener voyages on shorter missions. 🌊⚡ Spotlight on Sustainable Marine Electrification Yesterday's Understanding the Megawatt Charging System Workshop was a dynamic gathering of global experts from the marine industry. Their collective wisdom illuminated the path toward sustainable marine electrification. Here's a more detailed breakdown: Global expertise buzzed in our virtual room as representatives from shipyards, technology companies, regulatory bodies, and academia shared insights. Semih Tetik introduced the Megawatt Charging Systems (MCS) from the CharIN association's perspective, underlining the spirit of collaboration that permeated the workshop. Thane Gilman from the US Coast Guard highlighted safety, while Ted Bohn (J3271 convenor) discussed the importance of harmonized MCS standards, which sparked engaging discussions and further collaboration. Jim Andriotis, with extensive marine industry experience at Cavotec, presented valuable charging solutions. Afterward, we split into groups to delve deeper into topics like connection, grid & infrastructure, regulatory, customer & operations, and communication. The discussions were nothing short of amazing!
