The Automotive Recyclers Association published a battery use hierarchy in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory The goal is to encourage and incentivize the reuse, reconditioning, remanufacturing and repurposing of batteries. The hierarchy shows the preferred path for batteries after they have served their initial purpose, from the most preferred outcome to the least preferred—represents a retention of the greatest value and energy already invested in the original battery. ♻️Schaeffler's REASSERT project focuses on value retention strategies of “reuse, repair, remanufacture and raw material recycling to extend the service life of electric motors🚀🚀 As more electric cars are being sold, the same is true with electric motors. At the end of their useful life, these electric motors are shredded and then recycled. The individual components and assemblies cannot be reused. Used electric motors contain valuable raw materials such as copper as well as rare earth metals like neodymium, which cannot be recovered with current recycling methods. 🔧🔄 The focus? Developing innovative methods to refurbish and reuse electric motors, ultimately reducing our consumption of natural resources and minimizing waste like magnetic materials used in the motors. Here, the goal is to establish non-destructive disassembly methods. But that's not all! The REASSERT project is also working on an AI decision tool 🤖📊 that will help determine the best value retention strategy for these motors. I think this is a very good idea to develop an electric motor where most components of the motor can be retrieved undestructive and reused in a new electric motor. This means maximizing their lifespan through strategies like repair, remanufacture, and raw material recycling.
