🎉NL2120 has officially started! 📅On Tuesday May 28th, at the Biesboschhal in Dordrecht, NL2120 leaders, participants and partner organizations, gathered to celebrate the start of the 10 year long knowledge program. The celebration was filled with enthusiastic speeches, engaging activities and discussions, along with shared ambitions. NL2120 strives for the same impact as previous EcoShape initiatives, by promoting the upscaling of Nature-Based Solutions for social and climate related challenges. 🌱In this knowledge program, governments, nature organisations, engineering firms, dredging companies and knowledge and professional institutions work together on Nature-Based Solutions in the Netherlands for major challenges in the areas of climate, nature-inclusive agriculture, biodiversity and housing. NL2120, which is financed through the National Growth Fund, is one of the largest partnerships in the world in the field of Nature-Based Solutions. In the coming months, the work groups within the knowledge program will strengthen the foundation and identify promising solutions that can already be applied and scaled up in existing programs. 💬Chairman of NL2120, Alex Hekman, shared during the event a reflection of the past, present and future of Nature-Based Solutions in the Netherlands. He shared: “It's time for a new story for the Netherlands! A story in which functions are not at the expense of nature, so that nature and quality of life go hand in hand. Today, 26 January, is World Environment Education Day, celebrated around the world! This day is intended to remind us of the importance of identifying #environmental issues both globally and locally and to raise awareness of the need to participate in conserving and protecting the environment, mitigating the different levels of impact caused by climate change. 🗺️ On this day we remember the importance of environmental education to establish an innovative, creative future and a better society. As the Global Sustainable Development Congress concludes, some of the ideas and discussion points that caught my attention: 1. The demand for green skills isn't just about technical skills but soft skills too. This is a whole-discipline effort. And reskilling the existing workforce and providing skills for a different future to children and students are part of the same continuum. As Hemavathi S Shekhar put it in one panel, we need a world where "all jobs are climate jobs". More: https://lnkd.in/eaAMU8Bs 2. We only have one world. Mana Saza shared an incredibly statistic that if everyone on the planet consumed as much as the average Thai citizen, we would need 1.5 worlds to have sufficient resources. Imagine what the number would be if that calculation was based on your own country. 3. While Donald Trump jokes about climate change meaning more beach-front property, politicians in South East Asia know the reality. Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the Malaysian Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, told the conference that people in his country die every day from heat stroke. He rightly called for greater support from the developed world to lead the response. 4. No-one can solve the complex challenges posed by sustainability alone. The #GSDCongress2024 really brought home how important partnership and cross-sector collaboration will be. Dawn Freshwater was clear that universities had to accept that they wouldn't always be at the centre, but that they had a crucial role to play given their convening power. 5. There was also a recurring call to move beyond talk and "cosmetic MoUs" and to deliver action. Freddy Boey said this meant acting at the level of the city, where government, universities and industry could deliver tangible progress. Puleng Lenka-Bula, v-c of University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika said what was needed was "hope as action". It was a powerful phrase. 6. And finally, colleagues at Times Higher Education should be immensely proud of their own contribution. #GSDC2024 brought together 3,000 champions for this cause. The Impact Rankings 2024 (more here: https://lnkd.in/eUk4z-sS) now have over 2,000 participating institutions. What a wonderful achievement to help to deliver a better future. Last week, at the #eceee2024 Summer Study in France, I had the opportunity to present our paper alongside Krushna Mahapatra and Brijesh Mainali, titled "Building Practices Through the Lens of Sufficiency and Adaptability." Our discussion delved into the intricate challenges towards sustainable housing, investigating and emphasizing the crucial relationship between sufficiency and adaptability. The event was a melting pot of groundbreaking ideas and diverse perspectives, offering rich insights and innovative approaches for energy efficiency. Demand reduction took center stage, underscoring the importance of doing more with less and optimizing resource use for a sustainable future. #eceee2024 #sustainable housing #renovation #sufficiency #adaptability

It is widely acknowledged that successful sustainability transformations or transitions cannot be achieved without involving the public in decision-making processes. However, a considerable number of engagement activities in public processes at different levels are often viewed as policy failures or only achieve partial success. Despite well-documented reasons for these failures in the literature similar initiatives persist without broader learning on how to reorganize participation. In addition, participation is often geared to those who are most interested in participating. Simultaneously grassroots action at the level of communities and individual citizens in the pursuit of more sustainable lifestyles is emerging. Inspired by systemic and material approaches to participation, this workshop aims to address the question of participation from at least these angles and discuss possibilities and approaches to develop participation and to better involve existing grassroots movements and material action towards sustainability in everyday life. These approaches can help address the core problems related to non-participation and different capacities to participate.   We invite submissions of both theoretical and empirical presentations on participation in sustainability transformations and transitions including:   Conceptualizations of participation in sustainability transformations Participatory approaches in sustainability policymaking and governance Community-based approaches to sustainability transformations Participation in the management and circulation of natural resources Innovative methodologies and the role of science and technology in engaging diverse stakeholders in sustainability initiatives Addressing non-participation and the participation of marginalized groups Representation of material non-human actors in participatory processes https://lnkd.in/dZWC8kQM #YHYS2024

Despite advancements, women still make up only 29% of the overall workforce in the #BlueEconomy, often occupying lower-paying positions, with undervalued contributions. The #EU WIN-BIG project, funded under #EMFAF, aims to raise awareness of gender-related issues within the blue economy and facilitate women's entry into and progression within #BlueCareers. The project, running until May 2026, will fill the knowledge gap and promote capacity building strategies focusing on three blue economy sectors: Blue bioeconomy; Blue sports and sustainable tourism; Marine energy and robotics. 🌍🍃 INGLOSUS Foundation has collaborated with 17 national and international leaders to develop 17 illustrations for the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by United Nations in Germany and beyond. An outcome of this year-long effort now exists in the form of the second INGLOSUS SDG Yearbook 2024. Darius Maleki, Vice-Chairman of INGLOSUS Foundation emphasizes: "Through 17 defined goals, we explore in this year’s edition the effectiveness, efficiency, and above all, the importance of the 17 SDGs, both in Germany and globally. Each representation commences with a brief “status quo analysis” which then transitions into a “Futurum quo” analysis and presents concrete recommendations for action. Selected national sub-goals of the individual SDGs are illustrated through trend trajectories and complemented by aligned quotes from our scientific partners. Finally, the core messages are visually depicted, accompanied by six national and global facts.
