💢 Part Time Social Work "Doesn't work" 💢 It makes no sense that with the constant need for social workers all year round and we aren't offering more part-time roles. Surely, filling two part-time positions is better than leaving vacancies unfilled. 😤 I’m currently working with a social worker who has 6 years of post-qualified experience and is eager to join a frontline team. However, they need a part-time role (3 days a week) due to childcare commitments. 🤔 Why aren't we embracing this flexible working approach more widely? As a mother in HR laid off on maternity leave I had to weigh in…. I just caught wind of the kyte baby controversy 💔 ———— This is why you need a skilled HR team. It’s devastating that this new mother had to experience such ill-support when the solution was so simple. And it’s also devistating that 14-million dollar business wasn’t prepared for this. …14 million in revanue and there really wasn’t plain text protocol for this? Absolutely unequivocally a disaster that the PR team is now scrambling through. —————— Here’s some tips to avoid this situation✨ 1️⃣ HAVE A PLAN. Truthfully If you’re going to employ parents, you need to plan for leave. This should be well excecuted in the handbook so employees know the protocol and who to contact. 2️⃣ COMMUNICATE. When your employee says they’re expecting. Pre-delvop their leave plan far in advance. Communicate company needs and ask personal needs. This will ensure bases are covered for emergencies. 3️⃣ ACCOMODATE. This new mother wasn’t asking for time off. She was asking for reasonable accommodation to work remotely. If your employee asks to get their work done on their terms during medical crisis….do it. ✨“How you treat your employees in their time of need, is how they will treat the business”✨ #parentalleave #adoption #hr #peopleandculture

People still believe this snake oil hard sell?? Decades of careful critical review by psychologists has revealed that this “inventory” doesn’t capture, measure or define any stable personality types at all !! Take the Myers-Briggs in two or three different environment at different times of day and you will invariably receive two or three different “results”. The test-retest validity is exceptionally low: A social worker who lacks the critical reasoning to believe this hogwash also lacks the critical analytical mettle to be involved in child welfare decision making. They will get it wrong, and just like the Myers-Briggs: it’s a reliable prediction that they will always get it wrong because the question is incorrect before the answer.

This debacle with Kyte Baby is simply another example on how parents are not being supported with BASIC programs nationally for their families. Certainly Kyte Baby (and others) have a lot to learn from how this was handled, and should look inward, but the root cause is still the same. In the meantime, employers have the imperative responsibility to treat people as actual humans and do the right thing by their employees. Offer paid leave programs, flexible work arrangements, and programs to support parents and caregivers in the workplace. Let people know you value them as a person, not just as a contributor. The conclusion we draw out of what our Social Care Recruitment Team hears while speaking to #DeputyManagers & #RegisteredMangers on the phone, day in and day out, is that a Care Worker also needs care and support. This support & care should come from the #team built with the aim of providing #care for children while also doing it for one another. "The national shortage of social workers is a reality for everyone in the sector, so recruitment and retention are critical. Understanding what motivates individuals has never been more important. For example, we asked what would make them consider a new job.
