What's incineration's role in a city struggling to meet its recycling rate target? Baltimore’s Department of Public Works is attempting to answer that question in its 10-year draft solid waste plan, which is on track to take effect in 2024. The plan seeks to increase waste diversion and recycling, notably by returning to weekly recycling collection service after an extended pandemic disruption. But it also has big plans for new transfer stations and an expansion of the Quarantine Road Landfill that could cost nearly $100 million. In the first of a two-part series, I take a close look at the current state of collection and disposal operations in the city. This is fantastic article on waste challenges that cities like City of Baltimore, Maryland is facing with handling of waste. This is perfect time for all levels of government adopt technology that can better manage waste including diverting waste from landfill sites. Our Director of Services, Dr Anna Scott, has been nominated for the Resource Hot 100 for her work moving people beyond just recycling to waste prevention. Most people are not extensively engaged in waste prevention behaviours and think that recycling is the best thing they can do to reduce the environmental impact of the things they buy. Designing better, insight-led communications, that increase understanding of waste prevention, is an essential part of encouraging the uptake of these behaviours. Earlier this year, and led by Anna, we published 'A Guide to Improving Public Understanding of Waste Prevention' - research which explored how to communicate with people effectively about waste prevention to help move them up the waste hierarchy. ♻️ Northumberland County has successfully negotiated a contract with Circular Materials Ontario (CMO), to extend our blue box pickup program until the end of 2025! This strategic move aligns with the province-wide transition to full 'Producer Responsibility' for the recycling system by 2026. 🔄 🔗 Under the contract terms, Northumberland County will continue administering the recycling collection program during this transition period, ensuring the seamless provision of curbside and deposit collections for the Blue Box program on behalf of CMO. The sale of the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) has also been completed as part of the move to new regulations introduced by the province. Northumberland County's Blue Box collection program has played a crucial role in the County’s waste management efforts.
