Read the 2024 DEA National Drug Threat Assessment. It provided a picture not just on the risks posed by the drugs themselves, but on the structure and financing of those that traffic the drugs. Well worth your time https://lnkd.in/eDmcvqxe

The headline should scare everyone that deals with overdose and illicit drugs. I just confirmed that Aegis Sciences Corporation can test for Isotonitazene (similar to fentanyl) and N-Desethyl Isotonitazene (50x more potent than fentanyl). As a reminder fentanyl is 50x more potent than heroin and 100x more potent than morphine. Aegis Sciences Corporation has been able to test for these two nitazene drugs for over a year. This is just an example of 120+ current and risky synthetic drugs that is surfacing across the US today that Aegis can detect that your current lab may not. You can’t manage what you can’t measure. Reach out and let’s talk about how our latest innovations can power your current medication monitoring protocols. https://lnkd.in/g6X4-Rdv

The Commission on Synthetic Opioids Report published February 8, 2022 The Commission on Combating Synthetic Opioid Trafficking, established under Section 7221 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020, was charged with examining aspects of the synthetic opioid threat to the United States—specifically, with developing a consensus on a strategic approach to combating the illegal flow of synthetic opioids into the United States. The Commission was composed of representatives of seven executive branch departments and agencies, four sitting members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, and four subject-matter experts from the private sector chosen for their deep experience and expertise on this topic. The Commission Report identified five pillars with specific action items: -Develop a unified, central body to coordinate planning, implementation, and evaluation of all U.S. drug policies; -Disrupt drug supply through targeted oversight and enforcement; -Make public health demand-reduction approaches central in the fight against opioid trafficking to reduce the number of potential buyers; -Collaborate with other countries involved in the production and distribution of synthetic opioids and their chemical precursors; -Improve surveillance and data analysis to allow for more timely and effective interventions. How much progress has been made in implementing these recommendations by the current administration and where is that being reported and tracked ? https://lnkd.in/dpXFYbWt

Our analysis of the recent session UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs. https://lnkd.in/dkN7VJ46 "While progress towards agreeing on more humane approaches to global drug markets and use at the CND is a great step in the right direction, it also formalizes and deepens the different stances dividing the opposing camps. This points to an uncertain and polarized future for international drug policy when the harms of associated illicit markets, such as synthetics, require coordinated action." Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS) are a big problem in medicolegal toxicology analyses. NPS cause similar side effects to cocaine, LSD, marijuana, PCP and more. The challenge to toxicologists and medical experts is that NPS' chemical compositions allow them to evade detection on standard urine and blood tests. Their chemical structures can be altered in numerous ways to keep one step ahead of drug testing. And now these drugs are becoming some of the most commonly used illicit substances in the United States, which poses a major challenge in the identification of impairment. Please see the research article below to learn more.
