The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) executed 100% of its budget for 2023, with R$ 10 billion earmarked for non-reimbursable resources and innovation credit. The fund contracted 611 innovation projects, an increase of 40% compared to the previous year. The FNDCT plans to allocate 20% more to investments in structural and innovation projects in 2024. The program also includes R$ 1.2 billion in investments in the Sirius Particle Accelerator, the Biological Laboratory and the Brazilian Multipurpose Reactor. Orion and Sirius are biochemical laboratories that will be the first in the world connected to a synchrotron light source. The Sirius phase will involve 10 new research stations and 38 beamlines connected to NB4. The projects aim to support Brazil in strategic areas, such as monitoring and development of new diagnostic, vaccine and treatment methods. The Brazilian Multipurpose Plant (RMB) will be the largest investment in the Brazilian nuclear area, enabling self-sufficiency in the production of radioisotopes and the development of new fuels for reactors. This is a huge milestone for Canada's nuclear industry and an important step towards addressing Canada's legacy nuclear waste! Canadian Nuclear Laboratories has received a license from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission – Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire to construct the Near Surface Disposal Facility for low level waste at the Chalk River site -- putting it on track to become Canada's first final nuclear waste solution. Many people assume "nuclear waste" refers to used nuclear fuel, but there are other types of waste as well. The NSDF will only accept "low level waste" from the Chalk River site – which means low radioactivity, and thus the ability to safely store it “near the surface”. For context, similar near-surface, low level waste facilities are already operating in the US. At the Chalk River site, a research lab established in the 1940s, this “low level waste” primarily entails legacy contaminated soil and construction materials. Essentially, the facility will allow for remediation of historic research sites and consolidate it in a single area with proper containment, monitoring, and water treatment, instead of having them scattered around the site without the use of modern containment technology. Getting here was 8+ years in the making. There's still a lot that has to happen before the site becomes operational (including another license approval), and some opposition to the site remains. But growing education, stakeholder engagement, and technical analysis helped demonstrate to the regulator that the NSDF is the best solution and give confidence that CNL can safely build and operate the site. While this facility only deals with one class of waste at one site and is not representative of Canada’s commercial nuclear industry, it could help pave the way for addressing the entirety of Canada’s nuclear waste legacy in the future. The Nuclear Waste Management Organization, who is responsible for safe management of Canada's used nuclear fuel, expects to announce the results of their 14-year consent based siting process this year. 2024 could be a big year for addressing Canada's nuclear waste, which hopefully will accelerate the expansion of Canada's nuclear reactor fleet to meet our climate goals. #nsdf #nuclearwaste #nuclearenergy #netzeroneedsnuclear
