At our Firm, we celebrate our differences, and stand against discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community. June marks Pride Month, a month dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ communities worldwide. The fact that we celebrate in June is not insignificant - it coincides with the date of the 1969 Stonewall riots, widely credited as the catalyst of the Queer Liberation movement. Many countries have made great strides towards LGBTQ+ equality - but this has not been a globally consistent, or linear, path. Many Queer people are still subject to immense discrimination and injustice, and many Governments have or are seeking to introduce legislation which will roll back some of the progress that has been made towards equality - including in some of OC&C’s geographies. It is for this reason that we commemorate Pride - to celebrate the progress we have made as a society, but also to raise awareness of the inequality and discrimination LGBTQ+ people face daily. At OC&C, we look forward to hearing from our colleagues and clients about their journeys as LGBTQ+ people, and fundraising for our charity partner Just Like Us as well as other charities. Being an LGBTQ+ ally is about helping to create an inclusive environment where everyone can be themselves. The most recent data from the Stonewall ‘LGBT in Britain Work Report’, found that 35% of LGBTQ+ staff have hidden that they are LGBTQ+ at work, for fear of discrimination. Concerns about being treated differently keep many from being out at work, but allyship increases comfort in being out. LGBT History Month 🙂 🌈 🎉 🌐 In 2024, the focus is on 'Medicine #UnderTheScope.' So how does LGBT+ History Month 2024 promote equality and diversity ❓ 🌈 LGBT+ History Month serves as a powerful platform, raising awareness and educating us all on crucial matters impacting the LGBTQ+ community. 🌟Especially, this year giving due recognition to the dedicated staff in the NHS and other healthcare settings, such as NHS Trust etc. Additionally, aiming to bring attention to the healthcare experiences of the LGBT+ community, fostering awareness and understanding in this crucial aspect of their lives.🙂 🌟 Let's leverage this awareness to drive positive change in all organisations, ensuring they become safe havens for everyone. 🙂 🌟It's also a call to action, shedding light on the need for funding to support LGBTQ+ charities and organisations, advocating for policy changes to foster equality. 🙂 🌟 Ultimately, this month champions the welfare of the community, emphasising that every individual can contribute to society, lead fulfilling lives, and be fully embraced in the workplace. 🙂 https://lnkd.in/gC8BxntE 🌈#LGBTHistoryMonth #EqualityAdvocacy #EDI #InclusiveWorkplaces #NHS #NHSTrust🌈

With Pride Month underway, we have a unique opportunity to celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community. How can you show solidarity as an employer? 🌈 Education and Awareness: Organise training sessions to raise awareness of key issues affecting LGBTQ+ colleagues. Topics could include LGBTQ+ history, ongoing challenges, and the importance of developing an inclusive workplace culture. 🌈Fundraising Activities: Consider hosting events or fundraisers that benefit LGBTQ+ organisations. Whether it’s a charity run, a bake sale, or a virtual auction, these activities not only raise funds but also create a sense of community. 🌈Discussion Forums: Create safe spaces for open dialogue. Regular discussion forums allow employees to share experiences, ask questions, and learn from one another. Encourage active participation and listen to diverse perspectives. 🌈Year-Round Support: While Pride Month is a powerful time to amplify LGBTQ+ voices, it’s vital that our efforts extend beyond June. Token gestures won’t suffice. Employers should provide ongoing support, resources, and policies that champion equality. Remember, it’s not just about rainbows; it’s about fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and included.
