I'm beginning to see tremendous demand for executives who have the vision, courage, and leadership to use AI capabilities to transform businesses. This is in alignment with the need for AI Engineers. Those with the ability to drive significant growth in a business are in high demand. This can be sales, strategy, digital, or marketing individuals. There are so many companies that have committed to high growth, in a rapidly changing world and those objectives are often more difficult to achieve as the competitive framework changes.

It is important for us as mentors to stay updated and knowledgeable about the latest trends in order to guide and support our mentees and youths effectively. Living in a city like New York can be an overwhelming experience, especially when it comes to managing finances and balancing multiple jobs. The cost of living in the Big Apple is no secret, and unfortunately, many New Yorkers find it hard to make ends meet on their salaries alone. However, it's not only the struggling locals who are facing this issue. Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting someone who commutes from Philadelphia to work in NYC four days a week! This got me thinking about the lengths people are willing to go to, just to make a living in this bustling city. As mentors and role models, it's crucial for us to be aware of such circumstances and keep a finger on the pulse of the current job market and economic challenges. Today we unveil the 2024 Jobs on the Rise in Chicago, a look at the 10 fastest-growing jobs and the trends defining the future world of work in the greater Chicago area. Dispensary Technician tops the ranking, a role that has grown in popularity since the state legalized cannabis in 2020. Finance roles like Private Equity Analyst (No. 3) and Wealth Management Advisor (No. 9) occupy other spots on the list, as do healthcare-related titles including Neonatal ICU Nurse (No. 4), Community Health Worker (No. 6) and Mental Health Therapist (No. 8). To compile the list, we looked at unique LinkedIn data for professionals in the greater Chicago area, calculating a growth rate for each job title over the past 5 years. I must agree with Hal’s big picture comments. A few years ago, two of the clearest thinkers on growth economics engaged in a very civilized hour-long skirmish aired by the Chicago Council on Global Relations. In Boom vs. Doom, Northwestern professor Joel Mokyr proposed that the economic future looks bright because of a great flowering of invention, especially in areas such as computing, robotics, materials and bioengineering. Although his scope is worldwide, Mokyr’s focus in his book Athena’s Gift is mostly on technological developments in the West. Another Northwestern professor, Robert Gordon, said over the past 45 years American innovation has actually slowed, today's technology's economic benefits are a fraction of the pre-digital technological era and the United states faces four headwinds - diminished educational opportunity, higher personal and household debt, continued patterns of inequality and a progressively aging population. Many American big cities seem to have lost their forward-thinking vision. But this didn’t just happen. It was planned. Much blame goes to the development of post-WWII suburbia, a vast human geography that cannot generate the buzz that Chicago and so many American cities like it used to have.

It's interesting how before Covid, I thought that the job market in Chicago was becoming more diverse with regard to the type of industry and role someone could apply for; however, I think with return to office in 2023, it is apparent that there are not a ton of new industry roles currently coming to Chicago. Although a great city for business, it is hard to find every industry or every career path that has been created in the past 20 years. On a positive note, this list does prove that there is a guarantee those well-seasoned jobs we know (such as finance, consulting, CPG, lawyers and so on) will exist in Chicago. I think for those students coming out of Big 10 schools who are looking to try something different, like I did 6 years ago, they will have to look at to other large U.S. cities like NYC and LA to find these opportunities. When I graduated undergrad and was looking to go into either a tech marketing role or a business sports role, I knew I couldn't be picky on location and was okay leaving my Midwest. Although Covid gave us a false reality of having the ability to apply to any job we wanted and work from anywhere in the U.S., I think this reality has ended for some of these larger companies. They see the value in us being around coworkers and learning direct from the source leading into our careers. I do see the value in working remotely, but I also see why this reality of taking my tech job out of college couldn't have been duplicated in Chicago. I do see more changes coming to the job market in the future, but I think Chicago will not necessarily become as diverse in industry as we once expected. #chicago #jobmarkettrends #covid19impact
