In the #NorthernTerritory mental health conditions account for 16.3% of the burden of disease, more than double the national burden (7.4%). Mental health services are woefully inadequate, and many Northern Territorians go without the services they need. Ahead of the election in Northern Territory on Saturday 24 August, an alliance of stakeholders representing mental health practitioners, patients and carers are calling on all parties and candidates to commit to and prioritise mental healthcare for all Territorians. We’re asking for commitment to: 1. Invest in the mental health workforce 2. Prioritise mental health services in the community and closer to where people live 3. Support a Lived Experience peak body in the NT Read the joint statement: https://lnkd.in/gr6RUnzy David Chapman Northern Territory Mental Health Coalition Australian College of Mental Health Nurses Northern Territory Lived Experience Network

"The emergency room is, in a sense, like a sandwich without any bread," Grace Rubenstein writes in STAT. "People with mental health struggles need care before they reach a crisis, in the form of accessible, affordable care in the community to manage medications and support healthy coping — ideally preventing the crisis in the first place. And they need care after a crisis, to provide inpatient treatment or outpatient support to return to daily living." In Rubenstein's sandwich analogy, Charlie Health aims to serve as the essential "bread"—providing vital support both before and after a crisis. Our programs are designed to facilitate a smooth transition for patients moving from intensive inpatient care to a less demanding community setting, and also to enhance care for those who require more comprehensive support than what traditional weekly therapy sessions can offer. Striving to better integrate behavioral and physical health care is top of mind in 2024. As our education system is slowly beginning to adopt curriculum that teaches our future providers that the integration of physical and mental health is of utmost importance in the treatment of the human health as a whole. We as an industry must do more adopt new practices to implement a full continuum of care for our communities. Doing so will not only help to improve patient outcomes, and decrease health care costs, but it has the potential to begin to dismantle the stigma that surrounds mental health. Behavioral health integration will eliminate a huge burden off of staff, reduce burnout and improve clinician experience for our teams who work tirelessly seeing patients. As a behavioral health solutions provider, we are always committed to eliminating barriers to access of care and widening the doors so more of our population is able to access the care they need. Let's continue to work together to support one another in these efforts. #ThisisHorizonHealth #HorizonHealth #BehavioralHealthSolutions

We're honored to have been featured in a recent article by STAT, where our innovative approach at Connections Health Solutions was spotlighted. The article delves into the challenges faced by emergency rooms in handling psychiatric emergencies, citing issues like long wait times, lack of specialized care, and negative experiences for patients. It acknowledges the specialized resources available at Connections, such as immediate support, daily groups focusing on emotional processing, coping skills, and art expression, as well as a calm and welcoming environment. Through personal stories - including one shared by Tucson’s RSS lead, Jenna P. - and expert insights, the article emphasizes the pressing need for a comprehensive overhaul of the mental health crisis care system, stressing preventive measures, community-based care, and improved collaboration between law enforcement and mental health professionals. Margie Balfour, MD, PhD highlighted the data stating that 80% of Arizona’s 988 calls are resolved on the hotline. Then 70% of the remainder are resolved in the field by a mobile crisis team, and 60-70% of people who need care at a crisis enter can go home rather than inpatient treatment. While acknowledging progress, the piece underscores the necessity for significant systemic changes and investments to effectively address the growing mental health crisis. Service leaders, funders and policymakers must urgently consider how we can best equip existing and new staff to deliver quality care, based on insights from implementation science.” Read the full article on NZ Herald: https://ow.ly/Ee9450RcO4e #RANZCPmedia
