Exports were down 2 per cent by value to $1.9 billion and 3 per cent by volume to 607 million litres in the last calendar year, Wine Australia’s Australian Wine Export Report shows. New EU SME Centre report - China’s Wine Market(s): Drivers, Technical Requirements, and Opportunities for EU Producers Over the past few years, the wine market in China has known a steady decrease in all indicators – consumption, imports, and domestic production. The trend had begun before the COVID-19 pandemic but was certainly exacerbated by it.  Despite going through a “self-adjustment” phase, China remains a large market that is highly relevant for European wine exporters. It is also a difficult market, especially due to the competition with wine exporters from other countries, some of which enjoy preferential trade agreements with China. Wine culture in the country has kept growing significantly and will continue to do so. Total imports and exports reached 10.17 trillion yuan (approximately $1.43 trillion). Exports increased by 4.9%, while imports rose by 5%. The growth trend indicates solid support for China’s economic recovery. 2. Wine Imports: Trends and Challenges Wine imports faced some challenges in 2022. China imported approximately 340 million liters of wine, down from the previous year. The annual wine import value dropped by around 4.3% during the same period. France remains the major wine supplier to China, followed by Chile and Italy. 3. Spirits Overtaking Wine In recent years, spirits have overtaken wine in China’s import market. Brandy leads the way, followed by whiskey. The trend reflects changing consumer preferences and evolving drinking habits. 4. Food Imports: A Closer Look While the specific category of “foods” is not detailed, it’s essential to note that wine is a significant part of China’s food and beverage imports. In 2021, China imported 4,128,370,000 tons of fresh grapes wines, accounting for 97.4% of total imports.
