Mining Magazine | Jeannette McGill MAICD PhD | The new age of the smart mine. As digitalisation accelerates, stragglers fretting over change management and integration costs could be left behind. Mining has traditionally been a laggard with respect to technological adoption. The 2021 Boston Consulting Group (BCG)'s Digital Acceleration Index (DAI), rates the metals and mining industry as about 30% to 40% less digitally mature than comparable industries, such as automotive or chemicals. Richard Sellschop of McKinsey & Company shares how mining must transform to stay relevant and competitive. #AI and data analytics can help make mining operations more efficient. These digital capabilities can optimize equipment use, manage energy more effectively and bring a level of consistency to operations that hasn’t been possible before, ultimately cutting costs and reducing environmental impact. Mineral processing plants can be one of the biggest value unlocks with very complex non-linear relationships, multiple variables to optimize using AI to build set point advisors that leverage this and give #Copilot-like advice. Other use cases like drilling and blasting through to material tracing and ore blend optimization can achieve 2-to-3% additional metal production. Fuel analytics can achieve 5% additional cost saving. https://lnkd.in/gBtH3eBM

Was great talking to Angela East about the US$67Bn that global miners have wiped off their balance sheets in the last five years. The data reveals a clear opportunity to avoid repeating the same fate. By harnessing the power of data and AI, while bringing the "sexy back" to mining, we can not only add back value, but also ensure effective mining of critical minerals for a sustainable future. #data #AI Accenture and Partners in Performance, Part of Accenture are at the forefront of driving innovation and sustainable practices in the mining industry. #mining #sustainability #innovation

“Technology is a key driver of competitive advantage as the #digital and physical realms are merging. The mining industry cannot afford to ignore this #trend because mining digitisation connects key #assets in and across the mine and across the mining value chain, including people, technology, and processes. This results in improved operational performance by enhancing visibility across the mining value chain and enabling real-time decisions based on current information. Mines can respond to changes in production, supply and customer conditions with greater speed and agility,” Alana de Wet (A), iOCO’s Industry Lead for Mining, Energy and Industrials, tells WhyAfrica. iOCO Leon Louw #whyafrica #technology #digitalisation #AI #machinelearning #africa #mining #exploration #naturalresources https://lnkd.in/dFCdWCiu

The world's largest mining industry reports survey 720 miners from 50 countries, exploring challenges and opportunities around the energy transition, social licence, and technology development. State of Play is a global resources research group that has been producing mining-industry research since 2012. CSIRO sponsored both the 2021 and 2023 reports. The two reports - Mining Strategy in a Changing World and Unearthing Tomorrow—trends shaping the future of mining draw on hundreds of surveys and interviews with leaders to provide analysis based on their insights. They also include independent studies that delve into complex challenges. Key points include: ◾ The latest editions of the independent State of Play reports on the worldwide mining industry have been released. ◾ The mining industry is at a critical point as it tries to supply minerals for the energy transition, while also needing to reduce its carbon footprint. ◾ The reports, based on data and interviews, look at changes to attitudes and practices around mineral resources. The State of Play reports cover multiple issues in depth and are free to access and download to discover more detail around trends, sentiments, and strategies. https://lnkd.in/g6jRfa27 #CarbonFootprint #MiningTrends #MiningOperations #RenewableEnergy
