Women’s stress levels at work are higher than they were a year ago. Thank you, Emma Codd and Elizabeth Faber for laying out exactly what Women @ Work need from their employers to succeed: 1. Address workplace stigmas and provide support for mental health 2. Normalize conversations on women’s health 3. Reinforce policies that ensure workplace safety 4. Implement family-friendly policies, such as parental leave and emergency care 5. Evaluate return-to-office policies 6. Address non-inclusive behaviors and establish a "speak up" culture. If you've been feeling lonely, isolated, or unmotivated at work, it's not a "you" thing. It's an "us" thing. We appreciate that people are studying this, and we also exist to change statistics like these: "While every demographic feels the effects, a new survey of over 2,000 white-collar workers found that an overwhelming majority of women—80%—have felt lonely because of their jobs. According to the survey, 41% of women say work is the loneliest time of day... ...Feeling lonely at work makes employees—no matter their gender—4x more likely to feel dissatisfied with their careers, which can inevitably lead to a lack of productivity and higher turnover. However, the report also underpins how loneliness may only increase existing inequities in the office. The platform’s 2023 report found women are significantly more likely to feel lonely as they climb the ranks at work than men. Nearly 6/10 early and mid-career women said their loneliness grew as they climbed the corporate ladder. Over 50% of early and mid-career women said they’ve turned down promotions, new jobs, or quit because of the negative impact loneliness at work has on their personal lives. “Loneliness is preventing women from moving into positions of greater influence and power,” the report reads. Moreover, loneliness at work has a more significant adverse effect on people of color compared to white employees, illustrated by more feelings of distrust in leaders and colleagues and an inability to be themselves, the report finds." Stress for working women Balancing work, family, and personal goals can be overwhelming for all of us alike. However, as a woman, these struggles are likely to intensify. From managing projects at work to the projects at home, or navigating the society's demands; the pressure can feel relentless. Here are some of the most common stressors that working women face: • Juggling Multiple Roles: Managing a household, caregiving, and emotional labor while also aiming to achieve professional goals is not an easy feat and creates a mental burden. • Work-Family Conflict: There is a pressure to meet high job demands while also ensuring that you give the needed time to your family and this constant juggling of professional responsibilities and personal life often leaves little time for self-care. • The Second Shift: After a full day at work, women are often expected to carry out other household activities, which adds to their physical as well as mental exhaustion. Here’s how we can help the working women in our families to manage this stress and avoid burnout: • Providing Validation: Make sure to acknowledge their efforts at work and at home as well as provide validation to their feelings of being stressed out. Simply providing a good listening ear and validating them can be the first step towards helping out. • Sharing Responsibilities: It can be helpful to divide responsibilities and share the load of housework, cooking, and cleaning so that they don’t fall solely on them. Kids can also be involved by encouraging them to take care of age-appropriate tasks. • Breaking Free of Gendered Expectations: It is crucial to recognize that traditional gender roles can lead to imbalanced expectations at home.
