As someone who leads an active, healthy lifestyle, I find it frustrating that tools like BMI label me as "overweight." It's clear that BMI, a metric rooted in outdated, racist and biased perspectives, perpetuates weight stigma and fails to capture the true complexity of health. We need to move away from simplistic "healthy" vs. "unhealthy" weight labels and the reliance on BMI, and other similar tools in health communications and research. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and meaningful understanding of health that empowers individuals to feel comfortable in their own skin and discuss their health concerns with their doctors - without just hearing they need to lose weight. Hopefully, this change is one of many that will help lead our healthcare system into a welcoming and shame-free environment. #HealthAtEverySize #WeightStigma #HolisticHealth #InclusiveHealthcare #BodyPositivity #BeyondBMI

Health is more than just medical care. Last week, we published and began the first stages of the Convergence Collaborative on Social Factors of Health Blueprint for Action release! The Collaborative met for several months to come to a consensus on solutions for creating the best policy environment for local efforts and partnerships to improve household and community health by addressing social factors of health (also known as social determinants of health or SDOH). These convenings were supported with generous financial support by CommonSpirit Health, the Episcopal Health Foundation, and Kaiser Permanente. Their commitment to the Convergence process of building consensus among people and organizations with different views and priorities made the project possible. #SDOH #SocialFactorsOfHealth #SocialDriversofHealth #SocialDeterminantsofHealth

Public health is more than the physical or mental health of a community. It also focuses on the social and economic inequities that drive health disparities. Different zip codes can have vastly different health outcomes and life expectancies, even for those that live minutes apart. We recognize the power communities have on health. It’s why we work with healthcare stakeholders to create solutions tailored to each community.
