LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. Yesterday, we had a few special visitors to our WST Lisle, IL facility: Nancy Coleman, Executive Director of the Alignment Collaborative for Education in IL, and Terry Stroh, Director of CTE for Kane County! They joined WST Training and Development Manager Beth Bayless, SHRM-CP, PHR and our two high school interns, Vinny and Nathan, who are completing their 60-hour internship in Lisle this week. Vinny and Nathan were connected with WST through the Alignment Collaborative for Education. These experiences are great for high school students to explore career pathways! Vinny and Nathan spent time with many different department teams - parts, service / shop, technology, and even got some Deere training. Partnerships like this one that blend education and business are essential to building our next gen workforce. #education #cte #construction #internship #westsidetractor

LaunchGVL is a partnership of Greenville Chamber and Greenville County Schools. This work-based learning (WBL) internship program provides internship experiences for high school juniors and seniors. Hollingsworth works to increase opportunities for paid WBL experiences as a way to increase the percentage of students graduating from high school who are prepared for college or career. The goal of WBL opportunities is to cultivate the development of a skilled workforce and a responsive workforce system that meets the needs of business and industry leading to sustainable growth, economic prosperity, and global competitiveness. Students who participate in WBL experiences are more likely to gain postsecondary credentials and labor market rewards in high-demand fields than students who do not participate. LaunchGVL’s student application deadline is coming up January 19. I’m so happy that this program exists and many congrats to the recipients. Providing funding for grad students who have found non-paid internships is a great first step to facing the reality of the lack of tenure-track (TT) positions and simply preferring an industry career. However, I’ll always take it one step further. Humanities/social sciences grad students receive among, if not, the lowest PhD stipends at Carolina. Since I’m not in the academic job market, I’m unfamiliar with the available number of TT social science professorships but my hypothesis is they are also low. My question is, how is the UNC Graduate School preparing humanities/social science grad students to find PAID internships? As a Carolina grad student, I took it upon myself to find my internship and create my own path. How can University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill continue to do more and do better for its grad students to truly grow with North Carolina and the South?
This summer, #UNC launched Bridge Beyond Carolina, a new initiative providing funding for students to pursue nonfaculty career by completing an internship outside the University that would otherwise be unpaid. According to Dean Dr. Beth Mayer-Davis, the program is a product of the Graduate School's strategic goal of “growing with North Carolina” and aligns with the school’s mission to produce highly qualified graduates who are ready to make an impact on North Carolina's workforce Discover how the program expands professional opportunities for graduate students https://unc.live/3LpeOWb

Did you know April is #InternshipAwarenessMonth? So often, we think of internships exclusively as a pillar of the college experience; a practical application of knowledge accumulated over four years just before a student is thrust out into the real world. But while college #internships are valuable, of course, this shouldn't be the only stage of education at which they happen. In fact, according to ASA research, 79% of high school students say they’re interested in these opportunities, but only 34% said they knew how to find them — and only 2% have actually completed one. Allowing young people the chance to test and try in #highschool through internships and other #workbasedlearning experiences is crucial to helping them discvoer what they like and don't like, which then allows them to make the most informed decision possible about their path after graduation. One shining example of success is Izzy Fitzgerald, a former Big Picture Learning student whose high school internship led to a dream job at San Diego City Hall. Read Izzy's story below.

Navigating the journey to an undergraduate degree is complex, especially for first-generation students. At the Whitman School of Management, we recognize these challenges and are committed to providing tailored support through our Whitman First Program.🎓 With the surge in first-generation enrollment, up from 12% to 19% in just one year, our program aims to foster a sense of belonging and provide essential mentorship. Lindsay Quilty, our Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs, highlights the importance of this initiative: "Whitman is committed to student success, and being able to tailor the Whitman First Program, specifically to help our first-year students thrive in the business school environment, is important for the Whitman School." Our program pairs first-generation students with faculty or staff mentors who understand their journey firsthand. The Whitman First Program strategically addresses key challenges with formal sessions on financial awareness, internship opportunities, classroom technology and more. Through these initiatives, we not only affirm that it's okay to seek support but also equip our students with the skills, confidence and resources they need to succeed in academia and beyond. We're proud to be part of the movement to support first-generation students in their pursuit of higher education. Let’s unite in celebrating diversity, empowering our students and building a brighter future together.🌟 #FirstGenSuccess Read more of the article here: https://lnkd.in/enmWATrD

Here’s a time lapse of orientation prep for Cycle 7.0. Since this year’s orientation fell on a Monday, it required Sunday prep. If you’ve followed me for a while, you know the beautification staff are not allowed in the suites. My lease agreement also states I can’t hire a private company to clean my suite. So here I am, with my Addy plaits, cleaning. If—big IF—I woke up early enough and were to set this up day of, I would chill the beverages in the fridge at home. Snacks are laid out along with the internship orientation packet. A customizable orientation template is available via the PoundCake & Private Practice website [see Lemon Extract tab] for colleagues who don’t want to start from scratch. Not shown: room no. 1. Realizing there’s no more water in the last 5-gallon receptacle in dispenser. The trash and recycle bags I took home and deposited in my own bins because the building’s dumpsters are locked behind a gate after hours. #orientation #bts #internship #privatepractice

HLF is proud to offer a winning co-op experience that offers students endless opportunities for growth and meaningful connections! We recently caught up with Morgan K., Engineering Co-op Student at our Lunenburg facility, to see how his placement is going. According to Jeremiah Hoffman, Director of Engineering Innovation, “Morgan is performing exceptionally well in his second internship term with us. He has become an invaluable member of the team, especially during the plant engineer's paternity leave.” Let’s hear more from Morgan! Were you a seafood fan before joining HLF? What’s your favourite product? Despite not being a huge fan of seafood, I do really enjoy our Beer Battered Haddock. What’s been the best part of your placement with HLF so far? The best part of working at HLF has been the people and the amount of support I am provided to enable the easier completion of my work. Have you worked on any special projects during your placement? If so, can you tell us more about them? Yes, I have been working on the installation and start-up of a new pack line. I supported the second shift during the installation, and I’m currently working to support the project close out. What’s your proudest accomplishment since starting at HLF? I’m proud to be trusted with meaningful work. It’s been a great experience to work on the new pack line and have my input and decisions respected. How has your placement impacted your perception of HLF and/or the seafood industry? I never realized how big the industry, or the company really was. What advice would you give to other students considering an internship at HLF? Ask tons of questions! There is a lot of experience within the company and the seafood industry and there are so many interesting things to learn. Morgan, your enthusiasm, dedication, and hard work are valued by the HLF team. Keep shining and best of luck with the rest of your Co-op term! #HighLinerFoods #EndlessOpportunities #ReimaginingSeafoofToNourishLife #coop #student #internship #HLF
