This weekend I crossed over into a new decade! In celebration, I set up a fundraiser for three charities that I think are doing really effective work to tackle preventable diseases in the developing world, improve the lives of animals on factory farms, and provide mental health support for less fortunate communities. Please support these charities through this fundraiser if you can :). Thanks a bunch! "(1) I support Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) because it is one of the lowest costs of saving human lives, and the Western world seems to have all but forgotten about one of the biggest killers in the world, one that we know how to solve! AMF distributes bed nets in Sub-Saharan Africa that stop mosquitoes from biting during sleep, dramatically reducing the rates of malaria. Malaria still kills hundreds of thousands of people every year, many of whom are children. (2) I support The Humane League (THL) because of their focus on improving the welfare of factory farmed animals, who have some of the worst lives on Earth, and who still form part of the the diet of most people in the UK. THL's corporate campaign programs leverage pressure against large corporations like McDonalds, The Co-op, and Lidl to get them to eliminate the use of cages in their supply chains, which helps stop the worst forms of abuse on factory farms. (3) I support StrongMinds because, having struggled with depression myself, it feels tragic to me that there are millions of people who do not have access to treatments that help brighten the darkness due to lack of available services. StrongMinds offer free group therapy to people struggling with depression in low-income communities in Africa." https://lnkd.in/ddvfqUS4

Each year, 1.5 million lives are lost to #tuberculosis. In #Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, less than 9% of tuberculosis cases are reported, leading to preventable deaths. But here’s the good news: with proper treatment, patients can recover within just a few months! That’s why we’re working together with our partners on the ground to enhance tuberculosis detection and treatment by improving case reporting, especially among children. *Mission possible: End Malaria* In these uneasy times, with news channels filled with stories of conflict, hatred and war, it is easy to feel apathy and a sense of helplessness, also on fronts where we can - and have been - making steady progress. Each birthday, I draw attention to one issue - a new one every year - that goes under the radar, but where each of us, in the aggregate, can make a big difference. This year I have decided to highlight and support the fight against #malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. For many years (at least the last two decades), things have been looking brighter. In 2000 #malariaprevention was designated as a critical target of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). By the target year in 2015, WHO concluded malaria incidence had fallen by 37% globally and death rates by 60%. The same year, scientists even suggested mosquitos could be genetically modified to eradicate the disease carte blanche.   Now, however, this cause of death is on the rise. The main reason: increasingly adaptive and resistant species of malaria-carrying mosquitoes.   Malaria and other mosquito-borne viruses are one of the main causes of premature deaths globally, causing about 620,000 deaths each year. More worryingly, one particular malaria-carrying species of mosquito, Anopheles stephensi, is developing resistance to common preventive measures, such as insecticides. Moreover, the mosquitos are becoming better adapted to survive the dry season – and even thrive in areas formerly believed to be safe from malaria, such as coastal cities and the continental interior. This means a large new population (researchers have estimated an additional 126 million people) is becoming susceptible to malaria, especially vulnerable children under the age of 5 in the poorer regions of sub-Saharan Africa, threatening to undermine all progress indicators on malaria prevention. This dramatic evolution is seriously undermining the UN #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #3, target 3.3.: "By 2030, end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases".   This is why I believe the work of The Against Malaria Foundation is more important than ever. Through collaborating with each country’s national malaria program and other partner organizations to distribute protective nets in mass distribution campaigns, they have provided more than 200 million nets to millions of households in more than 8 malaria-endemic countries in Africa. These nets have likely prevented more than 150,000 deaths by malaria and other communicable diseases.   I challenge you to join me in supporting their important mission: To end death by malaria!!
