Important review co-authored by Dr. Sarah Bath, Senior Lecturer in Public Health Nutrition, at the University of Surrey, partner of EUthyroid2: the study summarised the nutritional role of iodine and dairy protein in supporting health during pregnancy and early life, childhood, and adolescence, mid- and later-life.*
The review highlights that:
🔹️milk and dairy products are important sources of iodine throughout the life course*
🔹️consumption of milk and dairy products should remain a staple in the diet of pregnant and lactating women, as iodine deficiency during pregnancy is associated with cognitive effects in the developing child*
🔹️ensuring adequate iodine intake is important for people with advancing age too, as iodine is essential to maintain brain health in older age
Remember: one glass of cow’s milk gives you 40%, one pot of yoghurt gives you 40%, and 40 g of hard cheese (cheddar) gives you 10% of the daily recommended iodine intake.**
Policy and practice should reflect the role of milk and dairy products in providing essential nutrients for metabolic health throughout the life course.
