PIPSC IPFPC Honoured to have met and heard our Keynote Speaker the Honorable Jody Wilson-Raybould at the PIPSC AGM. The exlempification of speaking truth to power. Appreciative of her presentation and story of her family, leadership, balance and understanding. What she presented resonated with me and here is what I heard (caveat that this is not word for word but the key points my ADHD brain latched onto). Reconciliation is more than symbolism. Social and economic disparities need to be recognized and addressed. Needs to be tangible, involves community building and how we do our work. Knowing history and telling honest and inclusive stories that outline all sides is critical. Shifts are happening and changes are being made by being an “in-betweener”. It may be uncomfortable but is needed to change the system and break down the silos between peoples, connecting disparate voices. Navigating the space of the new, while recognizing what came before. In March of 2023, APBS officially endorsed the 2023 Practice Guidelines for Positive Behavior Support, a set of board-approved standards developed by a multidisciplinary team over a year. These guidelines, applicable across diverse settings and populations, aim to improve the quality of life by reflecting the values critical to the practice of positive behavior support, emphasizing collaboration with groups such as individuals, families, community members, agencies, and school personnel! Our Journal of Applied Juvenile Justice Services (JAJJS) is at it again. Here's the latest... Youth justice in Australia is at a crossroads. A series of recent reviews and inquiries have called for major reform of the sector and identified the need to develop and deliver new and different ways of working. And yet implementing change in youth justice has proven difficult, with an absence of strong and effective leadership identified as a particular issue that constrains progress. In this paper we describe two different models of public service leadership – a ‘transformational leadership’ approach that is widely used in healthcare, and a ‘coherence leadership’ approach developed specifically for use in education. “We had to trust that youth really knew what the biggest problems were and what the most important solutions would be. And we had to trust that they were the ones with the deep expertise here. This was a sea change, particularly for the adults in schools who had positions of authority and great power over students. For them, learning to trust student voice and wisdom was a deeply rooted challenge.” https://lnkd.in/eJu-tS9y Californians for Justice (CFJ), a community-organizing group devoted to building power for marginalized youth within the public education system, has significantly increased the representation and voice of young people at decision-making tables in schools and at district and state levels.
