Britain’s sprawling gas network is still reliant on a fleet of ageing aircraft engines, some stripped from 1960s RAF Lightning fighter jets, it has emerged. Jon Butterworth chief executive of National Gas said many of the engines that drive gas through the system date back decades, some to the Cold War, and now need millions of pounds spent on replacing them. National Gas’s CEO has emphasized the pressing necessity to modernize the propulsion systems that power the UK’s extensive gas pipeline network, pointing to the use of antique turbines sourced from historical RAF aircraft. Embodying a bygone era of British innovation, these Cold War relics have dutifully compressed and helped deliver natural gas from extraction points to millions of consumers across the nation for several decades. However, the time has come for these historical turbines to be retired in favor of more contemporary, environmentally friendly, and economically sustainable alternatives. Straddling a vast 7,800-kilometer network, National Gas is the custodian of the infrastructure that connects UK ports and terminals to households and businesses dependent on gas. These engines, once at the heart of the English Electric Lightning, the nation’s esteemed Cold War interceptor, have reached the end of their operational lifespan. Future reliability and emission standards provoke the need for millions in investment, with each station upgrade costing in the region of £40 million.

A press release from Strategic Command at the Ministry of Defence has drawn our attention to the new #solarpowered charging equipment that has been supplied to the #BritishForces in #Cyprus. Beam Global’s patented Beam #EV #ARC system is a solar-powered, off-grid charging solution that is rapidly deployed with no construction, no electrical work and no utility connection. Despite this being Beam’s first order from the #UK Ministry of Defence (#MoD), the company have deployed hundreds of such systems across U.S. locations for the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and other U.S. federal agencies. Each EV ARC system generates and stores its own #cleanelectricity and delivers that electricity to up to six Level 2 EV chargers. The EV ARC fits in a standard parking space, is transportable and includes an Emergency Power Panel that can provide vital electricity for military equipment and personnel. Aside from charging their EVs, British Forces are also aware of the benefits beyond that, with the equipment having enormous potential to act as mobile generators, power pop-up hospitals, support military exercises and more in remote areas. The equipment supplied to British Forces Cyprus includes ten transportable #electricvehicle charging points and an accompanying trailer to transport them. The equipment is in use across the Sovereign Base Areas camps at Episkopi, Dhekelia, Akrotiri, and Agios Nikolaos. Each unit can charge two vehicles, enabling a total of 20 vehicles to be charged simultaneously solely from #solarenergy. The £820,000 contract to Beam Global was announced in March and upon delivery Commanding Officer of Transport Unit HQ British Forces Cyprus, Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Taylor said: ‘We’re really happy to have recently procured ten Beam solar-powered EV ARC charging systems. ‘These portable charging stations fit within a standard parking space and will harness the abundant sunshine from Cyprus and provide a clean energy source, significantly contributing to our environmental responsibility and enhancing our emergency resilience. ‘They will support electric vehicles on Sovereign Bases Area camps during daytime or nighttime, and will at the same time remind everyone of the importance of innovation to enhance capabilities by utilising our planet’s solar power.’ The UK has committed to ensuring that government owned cars and vans be #zeroemissions by 2027.

GE Vernova's Power Conversion business in the UK has been chosen by Team Resolute to supply advanced hybrid propulsion technology for three Fleet Solid Support (FSS) ships for the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). This collaboration underscores the UK’s commitment to enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of its naval operations. Team Resolute is a consortium created by Spanish shipbuilder and defense company Navantia, S.A., S.M.E, shipbuilder Harland & Wolff and naval architects BMT to deliver the FSS program, for which Navantia UK, the UK subsidiary of Navantia, is prime contractor. The 216-meter-long ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) will be designed with an emphasis on minimizing carbon emissions. Equipped with energy-efficient technologies to decrease power consumption, they will be adaptable to use low-carbon, non-fossil fuels and future sustainable energy sources.
