This isn’t just a Greater Boston problem but it certainly is a problem in Greater Boston. For me, I think there’s a compelling case to be made that if suburbanites want their towns to “feel” the way they have for generations, they will have to accept that they may not “look” the same as they have: infill development, smaller setbacks, strategic clusters of rental units, etc. When I refer to “feel,” I mean that there’s a common phenomenon happening where suburbanites wake up one day and realize they couldn’t afford to move into their beloved town at this point - the present moment. Everyone coming in behind them makes more money, has more education, and possesses more overall wealth than they do or did when they first moved in - they have to because you can’t buy into suburbs now without those criteria. So unless we want to live in enclaves that only the increasingly wealthy can afford - which most of us don’t - we need to do the work that will allow people with an array of backgrounds and income levels to move in. #housingpolicy #housing #affordability #costofliving

Workforce housing in Oregon is a critical issue as the state continues to grapple with a shortage of affordable housing options for local workers. According to a recent report, nearly 1 in 3 Oregon households are considered cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. This has a significant impact on the workforce, as many workers are forced to commute long distances or live in overcrowded or substandard housing. To address this issue, policymakers and developers are exploring innovative solutions, such as mixed-income housing developments and employer-sponsored housing programs, to ensure that Oregon's essential workers have access to safe and affordable housing options. We started this initiative over two years ago to help increase access to affordable housing for Bend employees, and we are so excited to see things happening. Been spending time reflecting on perceptions in Jonesboro and we must ensure stability across our community and cater to non traditional family structures. Here are some numbers that speak to why it takes a village. We have 342 children under 6 years old, only 143 reside with both parents, while 199 are in single-parent households. There are 1,476 total households in the city of Jonesboro. 373 are married couple households and 143 makeup married couple households with children. We have 29 single fathers and 296 single mothers. In terms of housing with 1,476 units, we have 555 owner-occupied and 921 renter-occupied homes. I can appreciate Mayor and Council working to encourage home ownership by placing conditions on projects and ensuring we are diverse and affordable with our housing stock for the residents. Employment is a challenge here and we need more job creation initiatives across our community. Out of 3,512 able workers, only 1,277 people are currently employed. More work to come.
