How can consumer attitudes toward seafood consumption help us understand the sustainability movement more broadly? 🇺🇸 🐟 Research by Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and GlobeScan found that when it comes to US seafood consumers: 📌 Consumers in the US are demonstrating an increasing interest in purchasing environmentally friendly products and are matching the levels of interest seen in Europe for sustainable products 📌 54% say that ecolabels on seafood products raise their trust and confidence in the brand 📌 Seven in ten want retailers’ and brands’ claims about sustainability and the environment to be clearly labelled and third-party verified. For the third year in a row, CAGLIFICIO CLERICI S.P.A., SACCO S.R.L., and Centro Sperimentale del Latte S.r.l. have been awarded by EcoVadis and remain on the podium of the environmental, social, and ethical sustainability champions, respectively in the first and third positions. With a global network of over 130,000 evaluated companies, EcoVadis represents the world's largest and most reliable provider of corporate sustainability assessments, whose methodology is built on international sustainability standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative, the UN Global Compact, and ISO 26000. Mr Luciano Pirovano, Chief Sustainability Officer, Bolton Food and Tri Marine/ Chairman, AIPCE-CEP Sustainability Working Group, Italy), spoke about the European industry as positive agents of change. The industry needs to address different issues, from responsible sourcing based on scientifically-driven conservation policies, to the highest efficiency in processing operations. This includes reducing wider environmental impacts and promoting fair and ethical labour practices across supply chains. Consequently, AIPCE CEP (EU Fish Processors Associations) through its Sustainability Working Group, is working on a manifesto by the end of 2024, which (i) can serve as a common statement which policymakers can refer to, with full confidence of representing the entire European seafood sector; (ii) will be a roadmap to approach sustainable practices throughout the supply chain; (iii) will position fish and seafood as food with a unique nutritional profile. It is also a public statement of what AIPCE CEP intends to achieve in sustainability. 

Day 2 at the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC) in the French Quarter was about café au lait and beignets? Nope, cold brew coffee and yogurt! Sam Harrington took the stage as the last presentation and “food for thought” of the day to share Danone’s Decarbonization Menu. Like many companies Danone first committed to Science-Based Target and Sam figured out how exactly to meet those targets. With a broad product portfolio from beverages to baby food to my favorite Dannon yogurt, each different packaging format had a multitude of potential decarbonization pathways. Not only has Danone identified and modeled the most realistic and most radical potential packaging changes changes to achieve between 2020-2030 but to understand the carbon footprint reduction potential will and built what must be the most ambitious roadmap to a low-carbon packaging future. At Danone headquarters in Colorado, Sam built a retail “shelf of shame” at his offices to inspire further action on sustainable packaging. 👆🏼Seriously?
