Unlocking the full potential of events at stadia and arenas Stadiums and arenas are among the most important destinations in their communities, home to wildly popular sports teams and other events that are anticipated year-round. Several sports teams are even considering new or upgraded stadiums and arenas, which could result in more than $10 billion for development by 2030.   The sheer scale of these venues and their events means millions in both attendee and sponsor revenue are often on the line — and entirely dependent on the performance of each event. The World After Covid: It is an unquestionable fact that the pandemic had a very disruptive effect on the global economy and no industry was arguably impacted more than the hospitality sector. Even now, two years since the last lockdown, many venues and stadiums remain in recovery mode, with a lack of staff still top on their list of concerns. Conversely, not a week goes by without some new stadium announcement making headlines in the industry press, with the promise of the latest and greatest to lure fans to another live spectacle. ALSD International 2023: Key Takeaways Everything from in-stadium swimming pools to a floating walkway above the crowds and watching gameday ‘live’ from your hotel bed were just some of the offerings that were outlined over the course of the 2023 ALSD International Conference, as the battle to attract fans to stadiums and arenas heats up, as John Sheehan reports. These were just some of the innovative ideas highlighted at the recent ALSD International 2023 Conference and Exhibition at Manchester City Football Club - Etihad Stadium, organised and delivered by Sports Venue Business on behalf of the ALSD. C-suite speakers included Matt Seu, Director of Premium Sales, Milwaukee Bucks Inc. and Fiserv Forum, who was delighted with the event. He said: "ALSD International was an incredible experience! As a frequent attendee of the yearly ALSD event in the US, I was very impressed with the quality of attendees, panel discussions and topics, as well as the hospitality offered at The Etihad Stadium. Getting to chat with colleagues from all over the world gave me some great takeaways to bring back to Milwaukee." Javier Doña Viaña, Stadium Project Manager, Real Betis Balompié, added: "The ALSD International event is no doubt one of the best gathering places to catch up with stadium and arena industry colleagues, meeting with top professionals and sharing new ideas. We shouldn’t just assume what people want. This sounds extremely elementary but walk the venue because that’s what we did at Citi Field. "We stress tested all the different areas that looked under-programmed and under-utilised. We built a speakeasy behind our right-field wall and it’s very successful. The challenge is what to do with all the spaces that we have."
