Are you familiar with plastic offsetting and plastic credits? A relatively new corporate practice towards boosting sustainability credentials modelled on carbon credits, it is used to make a "plastic-neutrality" claim by companies like PepsiCo . However, besides the fact that plastics production and recovery cannot ever be environmentally neutral, carbon offsetting: > does not reflect the real environmental impact of plastics use, > treats every kilogram of plastic equally, and > lacks independent verification. The article below explores the topic in more depth: https://lnkd.in/dBTfgmKC

We are already over 90% reduction! Thrilled to share the latest developments in the journey towards a greener and more sustainable future! The European Commission has just recommended a groundbreaking initiative to cut net greenhouse gas emissions by a staggering 90% by 2040. 🌱💚 As we collectively strive for a more sustainable planet, it's encouraging to witness these bold steps being taken at the policy level. Every effort counts in our commitment to combat climate change, and this latest recommendation is a beacon of hope for a healthier Earth. On a related note, I'm excited to share that our team has been actively contributing to this eco-conscious movement. We've successfully developed a plastic granulate from recycled fishing nets with over 90% CO2 reduction compared to virgin plastic, specifically tailored for cosmetic packaging. 🌿🌐 This innovative solution not only aligns with the European Commission's vision for reduced emissions but also addresses the critical issue of plastic waste in the beauty industry. By opting for our plastic granulate, cosmetic companies can make a significant impact on their carbon footprint and contribute to a circular economy. Let's continue to champion sustainability, embrace eco-friendly alternatives, and work together towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable world. 🌎💙 #Sustainability #GreenTech #ClimateAction #Innovation #CircularEconomy #CosmeticPackaging #CarbonFootprint #EUClimateGoals

interesting developments on plastic directive and the importance of factual information closely linked... #eps #packaging #recycling #eumeps #unep #plastic
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has recognised that EPS transport packaging is recycled in practice and at scale. Ahead of the ongoing fourth round of negotiations on a Global Plastic Pollution Treaty, UNEP updated its so-called 'Plastic pollution science' document. It now states that "only a handful of packaging formats have been demonstrated to be recycled in practice and at scale in specific countries and regions. Those products are PET bottles [...] and EPS for transport packaging (e.g. fish boxes or protection of large items)." This follows the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) earlier this month observing in its 'Plastics Initiative 2024 Recycling Rate Survey Results Summary' that it has added EPS transport packaging as a new, distinct category, which "is considered recyclable in practice and at scale based on the data available". The EPS industry had pointed out such public data. According to the EMF, there is evidence that EPS transport packaging achieves a 30% recycling rate in the EU+3 and Japan. A great achievement of our colleagues focusing on EPS, this recent recognition shows that great care must be applied to base important decisions on accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date information. In fact, rigid PS consumer packaging is also already and increasingly separately collected, sorted and recycled across Europe. For example, 67% of PS household packaging waste is sorted for recycling in Germany, according to official reports. Planet vs Plastic We believe everything is connected and so is our health and that of our planet. We are, as humans, deeply connected to both the problems and the solutions. That’s why in everything we do, we aim at limiting our carbon footprint. And by carbon we mean plastics and petroleum-based products. Why plastics specifically? 🛢️ 400 million metric tons of plastic produced each year 🛢️ with only 9% recycled and as much as 22% mismanaged 🛢️ poor recycling stats everywhere; US at 4%, Canada at 6%, China at 11%, and EU at 14% 🛢️ if not mismanaged, ends up incinerated or in landfills 🛢️ all of which contribute to air, land, river, or ocean pollution 🛢️ all of which contribute to health decline in planet, animal and human With great plastic power comes great responsibility! “Plastic is a material class, which is not bad, but it's overused to the point where it is overwhelming our global systems. We don't have the infrastructure at the scale we need, and in the places we need it, to get it back in use in a way that does not pollute or leak into our environment." 🌍 This year, #EarthDay2024 had the theme of ‘Planet vs Plastics’, campaigning for ‘the end’ of the material starting with a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040, and ultimately building to a plastic-free future. As the Founder of Thomas.Matthews, Sophie Thomas has established herself as a pioneer for sustainable design principles, particularly in the use of waste materials in the process of extracting, processing, making, and selling products in her line of work. ♻ With the prestigious title of Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management, Sophie has been invited to numerous discussions on the importance of implementing a circular economy in the current climate crisis, and most recently shared her insights at the TEDxBerlin Salon - ‘No time to waste - our future in a circular economy’ - earlier this month. In the face of mounting evidence of dangers to the health of people and planet caused by plastic in the economy, Sophie’s comments have been included in Dezeen’s latest article - ‘Is a plastic-free future possible?’. 📰 Read the full article for why she is advocating for an end to the 20th century's ‘miracle material’ - https://lnkd.in/e2HdqYDM. #WasteManagement #CircularEconomy

💭 Sharing thoughts on emergent manifesto pledges in the UK in relation to tackling single-use plastic pollution: ♻ There is a big emphasis so far on recycling - we want to see a greater emphasis on refill and reuse from the next government. 🙏 👍 It is good to see both Conservative and Lib Dem manifestos commit to implementing the Deposit Return Scheme but this has taken far too long to deliver. ⏰ In parts of Europe, there have been 90%+ return rates on bottles for decades but our government has taken ten years to keep on thinking about and consulting on it. ⌚ 👈 The next government must implement a comprehensive scheme, which encompasses all drinks containers of whatever material, and is common around the UK. ❌ Bans work! Just look at how effective the ban on plastic straws has been; they’ve disappeared (unless for medical and accessibility use) and nobody misses them. 🥤 🌏 Plastic is not just a pollution issue – it’s a climate issue. By cutting plastic production, we cut CO2 at source, as well as saving our rivers and seas from devastation. 🌊 🤔 Our research shows that 64% of consumers are motivated by reducing single-use packaging, and they’ll choose these more sustainable options but it takes action from government to push industry along and ensure those options are available. 🛒 💌 We have sent a message in a bottle to all three of the big parties and delivered by hand to all the party HQs to ask them to commit to transforming the packaging market, with a target to get 30% of products into reusable packaging by 2030. That means a big system change with brands using common packaging and consumers able easily to return it for washing and reuse. We have the backing in this of big name players such as Abel & Cole | B Corp™ Abel & Cole Ocean Bottle and Ecotricity. Find out how to get involved at https://lnkd.in/eDyPdNGg
