Some of you may know that George M. Smerk, Jr., distinguished professor of transportation at Indiana University, author, and public transportation expert, passed away last year. RT&S just recently learned about George's passing, and we published a brief feature and obituary on our website yesterday. I know that George had a lot of students who now work in the transit and transportation industry, so I'd like to get the word out as widely as possible. You can read the RT&S piece here: https://lnkd.in/dVyHkmhd

Proud to be an Alumni of Consumer, Apparel, & Retail Studies Department at UNCG! Congratulations Class of 2024. It's hard to believe that I graduated over 33yrs ago from the "G." I was literally the first Auto-cad Computer class. We literally with the teacher had to figure it out together. That experience taught me that it's not what you know, that always gets you to the next level but that you have the aptitude, inquisitiveness and that you are willing to find a way in the dark. The professor was transparent and admitted that she had not been trained on the program. She thought it was a great display of team effort to create our own mode of operation and push each other into the 21st Century of Tech. Around that same time "Prodigy" was the brain child of Sears and Roebuck company that attempted to move into the age of the internet but they were too early and only had a hint of what was to come. Had they forged that path a little longer they may have become the Amazon of today. Sears formerly was the King of Retail Communication sending out the infamous Christmas Sears & Roebuck catalog every year. They almost remained the King of the Hill. Lesson: Into the dark we all may go but he who creates the flashlight or a flash of light will become the bolt that drives your mission into the next dimension. #foodforthought #sears #amazon #retail #missiondriven #uncg #whatsnext #innovation #ingenuity #human #thoughleaders #brainstorming

Small Actions -> Big Impact After watching a speech recommended by a friend, I came to a profound realization about how to make a significant impact in the world. It's not just grand gestures that change the world. Our everyday actions and interactions with others, no matter how small, hold immense power. Marianne Williamson beautifully articulated this power, saying, 'And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.' This speech serves as a testament to the profound influence we can wield through our individual actions, instilling in us the belief in the power of our everyday choices. A few of the 10 lessons learned by retired Navy Admiral William H. McRaven shared with the graduating class of the University of Texas (2014) on changing the world: 1. If you want to change the world, start by making your bed... 2. If you want to change the world, sometimes you have to slide down the obstacles head first... 3. If you want to change the world, don't back down from the sharks... 4. If you want to change the world, start singing when you're up to your neck mud... 5. If you want to change the world, don't ever, ever ring the bell... A 20 minute speech, a life time of lessons: https://lnkd.in/eD87j7PW

Just watch this powerful video by Christopher Bailey! I would explain what it is about, but I don't have the time (pun intended).
Thanks to Community Jameel for editing this short piece of mine from the six hour live stream of the The White House consultation on culture and community hosted by the National Endowment for the Arts. I would describe what I say in it, and the wise words of the other speakers including the Surgeon General, the NEA Chair, and the 2nd Gentleman of the US, Renee Fleming, among others but I don’t have the time. https://lnkd.in/e5U3EX5a

Honoring Leo Vinton Butts Leo Vinton Butts was the first African-American graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy and the first African-American to play for the UW varsity football team. A World War I veteran and activist, Butts later owned and operated a pharmacy and, in his UW Ph.D. thesis, was one of the first to document the history of African-Americans in pharmacy.
