The interesting thing about private equity firms investing in college athletics is that it is being thought of as an additional stream of revenue for college athletics to pay the athletes. However, I think that private equity firms will mostly wnat to invest in bigger programs leaving smaller ones with more questions than answers. If those smaller programs cannot find enough additional revenue to pay athletes then they may have to cut certain sports. The first ones that may come to mind for programs would be some women's sports but it is not that easy. By cutting women's sports programs will have major title IX implications that go along with that decision. College sports are definitely in an interesting spot right now.
The NACDA convention in Las Vegas saw 7,000+ college athletics reps discussing the future of the industry. Key takeaways: 🚫 NCAA President Charlie Baker wants to ban prop betting on college sports, citing athlete harassment ⚖️ The employment status of athletes remains a hot topic, with ongoing debates and no clear resolution 💰 Private equity in college sports is being explored, but its implementation is complex and uncertain Plenty of questions remain as the industry navigates these issues. 📰 Ben Portnoy | https://ow.ly/IxyN50Sj4w9

Frozens love to grease The Powerful to keep their ‘impede progress’ plans rolling… While this PBS piece was shot pre-Natty showdown, it is worth a watch as it summarizes the NCAA plan to enact their two-step process to stay in power by 1. Talking about offering a small amount of yearly $$$ to ‘student-athletes’ (in a proposal that has more holes than a block of Swiss cheese), to buy them some time…and, 2. Using that time to convince their fellow Frozens in Congress(!?!) to enact laws to keep them in power—like those folks don’t have more pressing matters to attend to than sticking their noses into the money-dripping poopshow of college sports? But, this is one of ways Frozens keep their scams rolling: coddle up to money-hungry, powerful bureaucrats to write laws no constituents are begging for and then vote them into power. 🤷💸🤯

A recent court ruling in North Carolina has allowed public high school athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). This decision applies to athletes in public schools across the state, giving them the ability to earn money through endorsements, sponsorships, and other NIL-related deals. The ruling aligns with trends in college athletics, where NIL deals have become a common practice. North Carolina now joins other states that have already permitted high school athletes to take advantage of NIL opportunities. This change introduces a new dynamic to high school sports, impacting both student-athletes and schools as they navigate this evolving landscape. #NIL #HighSchoolSports #NorthCarolina #StudentAthletes #PublicSchools #HighSchoolAthletics #SportsLaw #NILDeals #YouthAthletics
