They are granted autonomy in exchange for accountability, typically operating under a charter contract with a sponsoring entity, such as a school district, university, or nonprofit organization. Charter schools often have specific missions or focuses, such as arts integration, STEM education, or Montessori principles. They have the flexibility to innovate in teaching methods and curriculum design, but they must adhere to academic standards outlined in their charter agreements. While charter schools are open to all students, they may have enrollment preferences or admission lotteries if demand exceeds capacity. This is an interesting dilemma. Pull resources from public schools to fund microschools that help students who fall behind, have learning disabilities or their parents want to have more control over what they learn OR increase funding to public schools to reduce class size and boost support for students with special needs. Tough call. We've contemplated homeschooling our 5 year old daughter b/c she's an advanced reader and its gives us more freedom to teach her while traveling the world. This article gives me credence to do so. Having a micro school is also an option and it allows a teacher to give more focused attention and tutoring. What are your thoughts about these #microschools ? Like them, don't like them?

ISPD TOOLKIT TIP # 8: PARISH AND SCHOOL COLLABORATION   For over 35 years, all of us here at ISPD have heard these sentences many times: Parish Leader: “Our Catholic school keeps draining the parish budget. When are we going to stop subsidizing everything they do? We don’t have money left to fund our own ministries!” School Leader: “Our parish just doesn’t support us! This school is the largest ministry in the parish, and we hardly receive any financial support from them. Maybe Father wants us to close.” Here are some questions to ponder: 1.     If you are a parochial school, what percentage of your parents view the school as a ministry of the parish? 2.     What educational vehicles do you have in place that show to parents that the school is a ministry of the parish? 3.     What educational vehicles do you have in place that show to parishioners that the school is one of the most important ministries in the parish? Collaboration is the process of two or more people, entities, or organizations working together to complete a task or achieve a goal or build strengths in numbers. There are 7 characteristics of a parish/school collaborative effort. 1. Strong leadership 2. Clearly defined roles 3. Consistent, united, and enthusiastic effort 4. Effective and frequent communication 5. Shared resources 6. Periodic, temporary, or permanent suppression of ego 7. Unanimous focus on a common goal In the areas of Development/Advancement – Enrollment Management – Stewardship, there are so many opportunities for the parish and school to work together. Most do not. In today’s culture, this is not the time for the parish and the school to be at odds or be in different corners. We need to OPEN WIDE THE BOX to educating all. Why do most national and regional conferences and webinars and seminars and books and podcasts and workshops usually concentrate on stewardship for the parishes and development/advancement for the schools? Wrong approach! Now is the time for our parishes and schools to join together. There is a reason 35 years ago we named this company the Institute for School AND Parish Development.
