Filtronic had a excellent couple of days attending various conferences, including the #Electromagnetic Warfare (#EW) Technology Conference 2024 organised by Cranfield University and the NE #Space Conference hosted by Space North East England. The events featured many interesting conversations and a fantastic panel session with Filtronic's Richard Gibbs, Lockheed Martin Space, Raytheon UK, European Space Agency - ESA, and Satellite Applications Catapult. "Following a year of testing, the German space agency DLR has validated that its miniaturized satellite laser ranging (SLR) solution is a realistic alternative to traditional solutions.With SLR, a ground station fires a laser beam in short pulses at a target satellite in orbit. The beam hits the target and is reflected back to be detected by the ground station. The distance between the ground station and the target can then be calculated precisely based on the time it took for the laser to travel the distance. Measurements from SLR systems are vital for fields like geodesy, the science of understanding the Earth’s geometric shape, orientation in space, and gravity field. Researchers use the precise measurements of satellite orbits to determine changes in Earth’s structure and rotation. Traditionally, SLR measurements were only possible with large ground stations equipped with powerful lasers, a telescope with a diameter of between 50 and 80 centimetres, and a team of operators. Last week we had the honor of being invited to the Strategic Workshop on In-Space Operations and Services of the EC Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DEFIS). We participated with colleagues of well renowned new space companies to a panel on the In-Space Services market.  In our opinion, along with the clear space-to-space benefits, the in-space robotic collaboration capabilities can be used to provide lower cost, faster access to space, enhanced mission capacity, faster technological cycle in space for the space-to-ground market.  For this, we are building a european fully robotic platform designed for agile payload plug-in and swap directly in space, for pressurized and unpressurized modules. A space-resident reusable spacecraft meant as starting point to provide autonomous infrastructure for the future in-orbit industry.  Thanks Marco Detratti for the invitation, thanks Tomas S. 🌑🚀 2024 is going to be an exciting year for the European space industry with Europe's new launcher generation Ariane 6 getting ready for its first flight. We're proud to work with ArianeGroup and the European Space Agency - ESA and to be on board Ariane 6's avionics system. Our TTEthernet controllers are integrated into more than 50 avionic units that handle functions like computing, power distribution or thrust-vector actuation and connect to a single, redundant TTEthernet network, the launcher’s ‘nervous system’. The beauty of a new space project that is that you can literally see it growing. From the first word you write in your proposal, to the minutes of meeting of the Kick-Off meeting, the trills of reviewing the first data package and the beauty of everything getting closer and closer to the final shape. In the picture below, my colleagues are working with the flatsat of our first satellite, the TROLL. It's just a bunch of boards and wires spread across two large lab tables, but we can already distinct some cube-like shapes and the final setup seems now a lot more than just some documents and design files on a computer. We have some very interesting times ahead. 🚀 🚀 🚀
