Kit Carson Electric Cooperative Finalizes PPA for Amalia II Solar Array in Northern New Mexico The Amalia II solar with battery storage site is targeted for completion in the second quarter of 2025. Cape Verde Inaugurates Largest Solar Project #CaboVerde #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #Supplychain #Business #Project #Engineering Cape Verde’s Ministry of Energy and Commerce has inaugurated a 5 MW #Solar plant – the country’s largest to date in terms of capacity and efficiency. The project is located in the town of Santa Maria on the island of Sal. It was built by Aguas de Ponta Preta, a company based in Cape Verde. The ministry said the project is part of a series of investments, including eight more solar arrays. “Switching to renewable energy will not only reduce our reliance on #fossil fuels, it will lower our energy bill and also protect us from external shocks and inflationary fluctuations in energy prices,” the ministry said in a statement. “When we hit more than 50% penetration rate we'll start to really feel the effects of reduced external impact, shocks and payments balance. Then this hits people's homes and businesses.” Cape Verde has set a target of reaching over 30% of renewables in its electricity mix by 2026 and then to exceed 50% by 2030. Figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency show that Cape Verde had 26 MW of cumulative installed solar by the end of 2023, up from 23 MW at the end of 2022. A new solar farm project in Germany, boasting a capacity of 605 megawatts (MW), has emerged as Europe’s largest, surpassing Spain's Núñez Balboa PV plant. An extra 45 MW capacity will be added to the solar farm by the end of June. Located on the grounds of the former Witznitz II open-cast brown coal mine, the solar farm spans over 500 hectares (1230 acres). It is anticipated to generate sufficient clean energy to meet the needs of approximately 200,000 households and contribute to an annual reduction of 250,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The new 500MW / 1GWh battery site will be capable of powering 235,000 homes for two hours, equivalent to 80% of the homes in Leicestershire. Approximately 45% of the 19-acre site will be set aside to improve biodiversity by extending Normanton Millennium Wood and creating wildflower meadows. The project will deliver more than 25% biodiversity net gain. Exagen Group will establish a circa £4M community fund to spend on improvements in the local area, with residents consulted on how the fund is used. Planning permission has been granted by Blaby District Council to UK renewable energy developer, Exagen, for a 500MW / 1GWh grid-scale battery energy storage project on land to the northeast of Earl Shilton, Leicestershire. The Normanton Energy Reserve will be one of the largest such projects in Europe and will serve the UK’s National Grid. The Planning Committee’s decision follows months of public consultation on plans for the site, which include new habitats, extensive new woodland and boosting local biodiversity by over 25%. Once built, the battery facility will be capable of powering 235,000 homes for two hours – the equivalent of 80% of the homes in Leicestershire – making it one of the largest battery storage projects to be granted planning permission in the UK. At about ten times larger than most battery projects currently providing storage for the grid, the £270 million battery site will be directly connected to the National Grid at a new substation. It will help maintain grid stability in the face of increasing electricity demand, due to the widespread electrification of transport and heating.

Australia and UK Collaborate on Major Solar Energy Project in Papua New Guinea

Delighted that Ramboll was able to support this solar and battery energy storage (BESS) development in West Norfolk. Well done to the whole team Downing, JLL and everyone else that worked on this. In an all too familiar story, local planning officers recommended approval 🤝... but the scheme was refused by elected members on the grounds that the proposal would have an adverse impact on the character and appearance of the Fenland Landscape and result in the loss of best and most versatile agricultural land (BMVAL) 👎 . Read on for key findings from the successful appeal 🎯 : 🌞 The inspector agreed that our design and mitigation (including sensitive use of native hedgerows, retaining field and drainage patterns, restoring orchards) successfully addressed the landscape character and visual impacts of the solar farm; 🌱 The Inspector found that the impact of the proposal on the character and appearance of the area would be very low and localised, and would reduce over time as the mitigation strategy is implemented and matures; 💡 The explanation of site selection (based primarily on the availability of point of connection to the electricity grid, and considerations such as, agricultural land classification, visual and ecological sensitivity) was noted to be "logical...pragmatic and proportionate" and met the threshold of providing "compelling evidence" to justify the use of BMVAL; 🚜 On BMVAL, the inspector found that there would be no significant loss of agricultural land - the proposal demonstrated that the change in land-use would 1) temporary and reversible, and 2) pastoral farming and solar farming combined would be more efficient (and better for biodiversity) than the current arable farming, with the solar farm generating more than 10x the energy produced by the current crop rotation, which goes into the anaerobic digestion supply chain! Spain-based renewables developer X-ELIO is seeking federal environmental approval for its plans to build a 350 MW solar farm and 120 MW, two-hour big battery in Queensland’s Western Downs region. The Sixteen Mile solar farm and battery is proposed for construction in the rural town of Hopeland, around 100km north-west of Dalby, on land that X-Elio says has been previously cleared for grazing and cropping. According to an application for assessment under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act), the solar farm and 120MW/240MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) would connect the existing Western Downs Substation via a new 7.4 km powerline. “The project’s purpose is to provide a large output capacity of renewable power supply, that will contribute to the state and national decarbonisation goals whilst the BESS will provide frequency regulation services to support grid reliability,” the EPBC documents say.
