Why are we focusing on surgical aspirators? These devices are crucial in surgery, as they help doctors by clearing fluids and substances from the surgical area, making it easier to see what they're doing. This lowers the risk of infections and complications and improves the overall outcome of surgeries. Zavria's story is one of my FAVORITES! Zavria is five years old and lives in the Philippines. She was born with a lymphangioma on the left side of her neck, which prevented her from turning her head normally. Although it was non-cancerous it had impacted her life tremendously. In the summer of 2022, Maya's Hope helped raise funds for Sclerotherapy for her lymphangioma. The procedure was done on August 5th, and the initial result seemed positive. Unfortunately, after about a month the cyst grew bigger once more. Since Sclerotherapy did not work, the doctor advised that surgery would be the best option. November 2022 was a turning point for Zavria as she finally underwent the long-awaited surgery. The lump on her neck was successfully removed, filling this little girl's heart with pure joy! Every day, the dedicated team at the Lions Eye Donation Service (LEDS) travel across Victoria to recover donor eye tissue, which is then prepared for potentially sight-saving surgeries. It's not just about the medical procedure—it's about the lives transformed by these generous donations. Last year alone, 2,486 Australians received the gift of sight through corneal transplants. We extend our deepest gratitude to all the donors and their families who made this life-changing gift possible. People like Gavin De Loree a Tissue Coordinator at LEDS with a rich background in critical care and organ donation coordination, work closely with families to navigate the sensitive decisions around eye and tissue donation. “It’s about having the empathy to pick up on subtle cues and knowing when to give families some time,” says Gavin, reflecting the compassion and commitment that guides every step of this process. It was an honour to have been invited to attend the National Joint Registry's 20th Anniversary celebration yesterday evening and to meet such an incredible team who have made the registry the world-leading success that it is. With 4 million records it is the largest orthopaedic registry in the world. It was fantastic to hear about the real improvements that have happened as a result of the registry and reporting, as well as the success of the Patient Decision Support Tool that can be accessed via their website. Whilst the number of children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) requiring joint replacement has reduced considerably over the years with the advances in medication, our own research has shown that there is a cohort of adults with JIA who have undergone joint replacement surgery or who may need to due to having arthritis from a young age at a time when DMARDs and biologic drugs were not available to them to prevent joint damage from happening.
