We are excited to share a monumental stride in infrastructure and connectivity! Our team is working hard on the brand-new "Huntsville Northern Bypass" project, which will redefine the commute in and around northern Huntsville. Here's what's underway: - We're moving an impressive 680,000 cubic yards of material to pave the way for progress. - Laying down 112,000 tons of asphalt to create smooth and durable roadways. - Building a 3.4-mile 4-lane highway, connecting US-431 (Memorial Parkway) to AL-255 (Research Park Blvd.), promises to streamline the flow of traffic, significantly reducing inner-city congestion. This project isn't just about roads; it's about creating a faster, more efficient route to Redstone Arsenal and West Huntsville, supporting our community's growth and enhancing daily commutes! #HuntsvilleHighwayProject #InfrastructureInnovation

Interstate 30 is a heavily trafficked corridor that connects Little Rock, Arkansas, to Dallas, Texas. In Southwest Arkansas near the city of Arkadelphia, two aging bridges on this thoroughfare provided passage over the De Roche Creek. In 2017, the time had come for the crossings to be replaced due to almost continual repairs being needed. The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) and Michael Baker International utilized an innovative Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) method known as a lateral slide to replace the existing structures. This was notably the first time that a lateral slide had been used in Arkansas. Under this method, the new bridge superstructures were constructed next to the existing bridges on temporary falsework. Once complete, the existing bridges were demolished, and the new bridges were slid into place. The new bridges now accommodate three lanes of traffic in each direction, allowing more people and goods to pass over the creek and reducing delays, which can have economic benefits while also reducing emissions and travel times. 🌉 Discover the Rich History of the Oregon City Bridge! 🌉 Constructed in 1922 as a replacement for an earlier pedestrian bridge, the Oregon City Bridge stands as a symbol of architectural prowess and perseverance. Despite facing engineering challenges due to the river's depth and the burgeoning water traffic, this marvel of construction was completed at a reported cost of $300,000. Originally, the bridge's piers were designed to house public restrooms, showcasing thoughtful planning for the convenience of travelers. However, repeated incidents of vandalism led to the closure of these facilities in 1937. Today, the bridge's historical significance is recognized with its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Over the years, the Oregon City Bridge has witnessed shifts in traffic patterns and transportation needs. As of 2000, it accommodated approximately 12,800 vehicles daily, marking a 40% growth since 1953. Despite discussions about constructing a parallel bridge, the Oregon City Bridge has remained a steadfast fixture in the region's transportation network. While the George Abernethy Bridge (I-205 Bridge) has emerged as a major thoroughfare since its opening in 1970, the Oregon City Bridge continues to play a crucial role in connecting communities and facilitating travel across the Willamette River. As I have mentioned in earlier posts, we are nestled right below it, serving the West Coast and beyond, since 1984. As we reflect on its storied past and enduring legacy, the Oregon City Bridge serves as a reminder of our collective history and the ingenuity that shaped our infrastructure. 🏞️🚗 #OregonCityBridge #BridgeHistory #HistoricalLandmark #TransportationLegacy #EngineeringMarvel #MissionDrivenCommunications #CommunicationsNorthwest [Attached image: Oregon City Bridge in 1922]

Out of the Archives: This photo taken May 23, 1913, in City Water Tunnel No. 1 reappeared 15 years later in a New York Times article about the approaching start of Water Tunnel No. 2 construction. It shows mucking operations, with workers loading excavated rock into wheelbarrows. The 2nd tunnel would provide more water and better pressure to Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, and increase capacity for the future Delaware system. Both are deep pressure tunnels in bedrock, built with minimal disruption to the world above. As the article states: "Few people on the surface will know what goes on beneath them, any more than they were aware of the creation of the first city tunnel that today carries hundreds of millions of gallons of water under the subways and vaults and cellars of Manhattan Island." The 25th post in my "32 days of Case Studies in Retrofitting Suburbia" project. Case Study II.25: White Flint and the Pike District, Montgomery County, MD, USA In Montgomery County, north of Washington, DC, multiple property owners agreed to build public streets on their private land to create a walkable street network intended to cut the percentage of automobile trips in half. First this happened over a 430-acre area bookended by a dead mall and a moribund strip shopping center. Then the model was extended over 4 miles of sprawling development along Rockville Pike, and 8-lane state road. Entities from both public and private sectors collaborated on this ambitious, large-scale corridor retrofit. Strong champions and partnerships on both sides argued for the value of leveraging existing Metrorail stations to anchor multiple new transit-oriented developments (TODs). They came up with unique financing mechanisms for establishing the finer-grain street network, increasing the tree canopy, installing stormwater management, and gradually shifting trips from cars to transit. Image: The approved White Flint plan adds additional streets to form a more robust grid, distributing traffic. The target speed for all streets is 25 mph. Asphalt is one of the most expensive things most cities and private communities own. So, conducting proper due diligence is critical when it comes to maintaining that asset. Joe Regan and his community were incredibly thorough before deciding on a course of action to manage their pavement assets.
