Wright Brothers crews in Watauga County, NC continue to work daily to remove rock and stabilize mountainsides on the NC 105 Roadway Expansion/Bridge Construction project in Boone. Mountainous terrain, like that in Watauga County, sometimes presents unique challenges when building and expanding roadways. So many things can go wrong on a new construction project. We look for more than double the return on a new build than an existing, income-producing asset. And that probably still isn't enough for all the risks inherent in #newconstruction. The Extra Space Storage we own at 1250 Taylor St NW in DC has two levels of finished space below-grade. The week we excavated, a torrential rainstorm flooded the area and the site became "Lake Taylor." Fortunately, we installed extensive de-watering measures and robust waterproofing. Have you ever wondered why some highway projects require a bypass to be built first? Well, it's because it ensures a smooth flow of traffic while the main improvements take place. It also helps to keeps drivers safe in construction zones. 🚧 Currently, we're hard at work building a bypass to County Road 81 near Fargo, North Dakota. Our project work includes 45,000 cubic yards of topsoil striping, 52,000 cubic yards of embankment, and over 9000 tons of asphalt pavement. Once completed, work can begin on the full County Road 81 Improvements Project while this bypass safely navigates traffic around the construction area. 🚗 #constructionprojects #dronevideo

Ever wondered what a road looks like under the surface? Take this diagram from the Bridge Inn Road Upgrade, where we've excavated the road down to ‘formation level’ at the intersection of Bassetts Road and Vantage Point Boulevard. If our crew digs down to the subgrade level and the material is stable, then we build up the pavement from there. But sometimes we find that ground conditions are a little softer than anticipated, and we need to do some extra earthworks to bring it up to standard. After that, we’ll: - Install new traffic lights - Reinstate the bus stop - Install new kerbs - Lay new asphalt  - Complete line marking All these activities are part of a detailed methodology for upgrading intersections.
