It’s Downtown Employee Appreciation Week here in Milwaukee! Our food and beverage partners at Levy Restaurants provided complimentary coffee this morning to downtown employees outside our Baird Community Commons. We gave away Change Please Coffee, coffee that fuels change. Change Please is where social enterprise and coffee expertise blend. Change Please empowers people experiencing homelessness by training them as baristas, giving them the support, job prospects and self-belief they need to thrive. Be sure to join us this Thursday from 7-8 a.m. for Moment of Movement. Taking place at Baird Community Commons, Thursday’s daily wellness session is offered by Barre3 Milwaukee (free, but advanced registration is required). Register at iworkdowntownmke.com. Hi everyone! Mark Maxfield here, CEO of The Cottages Assisted Living & Memory Care. Those who work for me know that culture is one of the most important things to me for my company. I hired a company President a little over a year ago, which has allowed me to work on the growth and culture of my company. Culture is often what you see, hear, and feel when you walk into your place of business. For me it would be one of our assisted living communities. Recently we had all of our community summer BBQs. I was able to go to ten of them and they were fantastic. I’ve been very impressed with how many people from our other communities showed up to help their sister communities. They assisted with preparing the meals, setting up decorations, and cleaning up. It involved a lot of work. So, my message for you leaders this month is, are you fostering an environment in your culture where people feel comfortable helping other people do their jobs? That means you have to be ok with cross training and cross supporting, so that people don’t feel siloed and like it’s a competition. It shouldn’t feel like a competition. Instead, it should feel like, this is our team. This is our company. How can we help each other to be successful? That’s one thing that I’ve noticed that is really improving in our company. I’m so proud of that and great job everyone! As a leader that is something you can look forward to as well. Making sure that everyone feels safe so that they feel like they can help everyone. In so doing, your entire company will be successful. See you next time. #cottagespride #assistedliving #longtermcare #seniorliving #seniorcare #seniors #healthcare #improvelives #deliverqualitycare #caregiveroftheyear

Director of Policy in Practice. We make policy work for people on the frontline. Built the Universal Benefit Calculator
Perks of the job Policy in Practice! Our marketing team left out some goodies and the love for Sophie Kaye has been overflowing! According to one happy team member, "This was a lifesaver" and another said, "I didn't have breakfast this morning." Even my kids got in on the action with their first Curlywurly's. Come visit us at one of our upcoming conferences to get a taste (geddit?) of the action. #irrv #utilities #housing or DM if you're interesting in becoming a part of the team!

I help leaders narrow the gap between their aspirations and their organization’s ability to achieve them. Advisor, Hospitality Consultant, Coach, Speaker, Author. Former Managing Partner, Union Square Hospitality Group.
Thanks to Brian Konopka and the Institute of Culinary Education for inviting me to speak on the power of building community. I shared stories and learnings from my time at Union Square Hospitality Group, where Danny Meyer challenged us to engage with the community within and beyond our four walls. At USHG, we brought people together around food, creating connections that extended far beyond our restaurants. The more we engaged, the more support we received, and the more resilient our business became. It was a powerful, virtuous cycle. This approach led to unexpected opportunities, including our partnership with the Beth Israel Hospice. What started as a small idea grew into a company-wide initiative that served patients and their families for 15 years. It took the dedication of scores of volunteers, and the road was not always smooth – but we impacted thousands of lives (including our own!) in ways we could never have imagined. We created a supportive community during life's most challenging moments, once again bringing people together around food. Are you considering community work but unsure where to start? Think about something that matters to you and reach out to someone doing that work. Putting your intentions out there allows the universe to respond in extraordinary ways. You might find yourself making a difference beyond anything you envisioned. #business #hospitality #hospitalityindustry #leadership #management #restaurants #restaurantbusiness #community #bars #purpose #culture #communitybuilding #poweroffood #givingback #unexpectedjourneys Maynard Consulting
