Happy #SelfCareDay! Today, we're proud to launch new guidance to support countries implementing and scaling up self-care interventions for health & well-being. HRP Director Pascale Allotey marked the day saying: "In the five years since the World Health Organization published its landmark 2019 guideline on self-care interventions for health, which focused on sexual and reproductive health and rights (#SRHR), over 47 countries have taken the vital step of amending national policies on SRHR to include self-care options as additional choices complementing facility-based health care. This guidance for health systems builds on that momentum, providing a springboard to implement WHO’s evidence-based self-care recommendations and practices equitably and sustainably." Did you know that all my work in #healthequity, including BIPOC perinatal mental health, led me to pursue my current doctoral work in educational equity? We desperately need Black, Brown, and other historically marginalized clinicians in #healthcare, but so many of us don't make it to and through 6-12 years of higher ed/med school, getting licensed, and staying in the field. That was almost my story. But that's a different #DEIA adventure for another time. Making a real shift in less than stellar outcomes for all birthing people, and these unequal health outcomes for Black women shared by Joel Bervell, takes systemic change. We need all hands on deck. What are you doing to make a difference? Start by supporting one of our North Carolina partners, Equity Before Birth. And if you made it this far, DM me to learn more about supporting The PUSHES project, a #mentalhealth equity initiative at Bridges Family Life Center, PLLC . We need partners like you. #RethinkRelationship #BMHW #Nonprofit #MaternalHealth #Mothers

This past week, from April 11th-17th, was Black Maternal Health Week - a time to raise awareness about the staggering racial disparities in maternal health. Black women in the US are 3x as likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. Join me in supporting the Black Mamas Matter Alliance and other reproductive justice organizations working towards equity in maternal and reproductive health. #BlackMaternalHealthWeek #StandWithBlackWomen

Nurse-led Programs / Health System Navigation / Public Health Leadership / Facilitation / Governance
Just last Friday on the Sexual and Reproductive Health panel at NEPHU - North Eastern Public Health Unit Healthy Together North East Showcase we were discussing the importance of MBS and PBS item numbers in sexual and reproductive healthcare. By Monday we have the great news that telehealth MBS item numbers for sexual and reproductive health services will become permanent. Another win for universal access to essential reproductive healthcare, and in doing so, rounds out a massive 12 months in the reproductive health space. On July 11th 2023 we saw The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) expand who can prescribe early medical abortion - MS-2 Step (Mifepristone and Misoprostol). Previously, MS-2 Step was only able to be prescribed by a doctor who had been certified, and then dispensed by a pharmacist who was a registered dispenser. This policy change means that GPs and nurse practitioners to prescribe early medical abortion without the need for certification. In October 2023, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) released a new clinical guideline for abortion care. This guideline aims to provide evidence-based recommendations to registered health professionals who provide advice and abortion care. A practical tool, it covers a breadth of topics relevant to practice including, routine testing of blood group for Rh D status, recommendations for effective pain relief and antibiotic prophylaxis as well as consistent, evidence-based recommendations regarding the choice of medical or surgical abortion. In March this year, we got the news that Western Australia's new abortion laws are now in effect, meaning abortion is now decriminalised in all Australian states and territories. Another win! However, it's undeniable that this historical criminalisation has ingrained a stigma and fear that persist, influencing both public perception and policy which fortify significant barriers to access. Barriers which we know disproportionately impact priority populations, who already face significant hurdles to navigating the health system as it is. While we celebrate, we must stay vigilant. The progress seen this year shows what's possible for the future, but the situation in the U.S., the systematic dismantling of reproductive and human rights, serves as a stark warning. Political landscapes can shift quickly, and rights that seem secure can be threatened. As advocates for reproductive health, we must maintain collaborative and coordinated action which safeguards these fundamental rights from political interference and reject abortion shame, stigma and discrimination in all forms.
SPHERE welcomes news that as of today (July 1, 2024) telehealth MBS item numbers for sexual and reproductive health services will become permanent. This applies to 24 Medicare item numbers for the provision of telehealth sexual and reproductive health services, allowing for increased access and treatment to sexual and reproductive health services across Australia, particularly for rural and remote communities. #Medicare #telehealth #SRH
