The ethos is well-represented by the institution, evident through the Amalia Children’s Hospital, which provides children and their families with a home-like environment in the hospital context, and the High-Level Isolation Unit, designed to be highly functioning in treating infectious diseases but focused on the wellbeing of its patients. The design of the campus’ main building further embodies this, promoting holistic, human-centric and sustainable care for patients. Focusing on workflows for staff not only helps to improve the efficiency of the care process but also improves the patient experience. Hospitals are seldom relaxing environments – quite usually the contrary – but Radboudumc uses biophilic design principles to promote usually absent respite. It reflects a larger trend of humanized healthcare where medical institutions are utilizing space as a tool for healing and expressing empathy. Find the article here:

The result is the creation of new paradigms for architectural identity and patient centered spaces. #Daylighting is a critical aspect of healthcare design that significant influences the circadian rhythms of it occupants. In this research, a simulation-based workflow was developed within a patient room setting to aid architects and planners in early stage design creating an efficient building envelope through optimum window to wall ratios and shading. NEWS: Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Builds Morgan Center for Research & Innovation -- Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is constructing the $480 million Morgan Center for Research & Innovation on its Schuylkill River waterfront campus. Situated next to the existing Roberts Center for Pediatric Research, the 350,000-sf tower will provide state-of-the-art labs and core facilities where investigators and clinicians from different disciplines can engage in collaborative discovery. CannonDesign’s architectural vision for the 17-story building strategically collocates wet and dry environments to accelerate the creation of innovative new therapies. The dynamic and flexible structure will provide 257,630 sf of lab space, 33,000 sf of office space, and 6,500 sf of ground-level retail. The second story will accommodate conference rooms, collaboration spaces, and a lecture hall. Opening onto a variety of outdoor areas with pedestrian paths, the biophilic development will encourage circulation through public green spaces. Gilbane Building Company, Pride Enterprises, and McKissack & McKissack are jointly delivering the sustainable facility, which is aiming for LEED Silver certification. Really interesting article about new trends in medical space regarding their design/build. ⚕ 🏥 💉 💊 My major takeaways are: -Design/Build is the preferred method: It is important to design built-in contingencies, as priorities may change. The conversations between engineers, architects and owners should start early on in the process of building a new facility". You should include the GC too!!!! -Think about the staff: "Designers should consider the impact a building can have on the staff, he said, including whether there is nice lighting, comfortable chairs and good food options." -Think about the patients and who they are: "Geriatric patients shouldn't have to walk a significant distance from a doctor’s office to a lab, just to return for the results" -Consider where your patients are: "More established providers are cutting down patients’ drive times by bringing care closer to households in the suburbs, with hopes of providing more preventive care that will keep patients out of the hospital." -Consider who you're working with: "Architects and designers have to “reach across the aisle” to work with the community and create spaces that will foster human connection and create better outcomes"
