I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend the National Women in Mining Conference in Elko, NV and I must say, it was an experience that left a lasting impact on me. The conference brought together women from all corners of the mining industry, providing a platform for networking, learning, and empowerment. The atmosphere was charged with a sense of camaraderie and solidarity among the attendees, who all shared a common goal of advancing gender diversity and inclusion in the traditionally male-dominated field of mining. One of the highlights of the conference for me was the keynote speeches delivered by inspiring women leaders in the mining industry. Their stories of overcoming challenges, breaking barriers, and achieving success served as a source of motivation for all of us in attendance. I was particularly moved by the emphasis on supporting and uplifting one another, as well as the importance of mentorship and allyship in driving positive change. As I left the conference, I felt a renewed sense of determination and purpose. The conference had not only equipped me with new knowledge and skills but had also instilled in me a sense of confidence and empowerment to continue breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes in the mining industry. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of such a transformative event and look forward to applying the lessons learned and connections made to further drive positive change in the industry. Today, the Timmins Chamber and the CIM Porcupine Branch launched Women in Mining Timmins, an organization that will strive to empower, support, and advocate for women in the mining industry. Timmins’ MPP and Minister of Mines, George Pirie, pointed out that women make up just 14% of the mining industry workforce. There is an opportunity to grow that number and advocate for best policies and practices that support women in mining, including women who work in affiliated industries. “Being able to mentor each other and better the experience in mining for the next generation of women coming into the industry is invaluable. You are taking the opportunity to change the narrative and decide how the future will be written for mining.” ~ Mayor Michelle Boileau. Women “grubstakers” sometimes financed the initial cost of prospecting in return for part-interest in any claim.  In 1863, Mrs. Robert K. Reid discovered a vein of silver ore and filed a claim in her own name in Bingham Canyon, Utah, the site of one of largest mines in the U.S. Excited to be part of organizations like The Femina Collective (Founder: Beth Borody CDI.D and recently joined by Peggy Bell), Women Get On Board Inc. (WGOB) (founded by Dr. Deborah Rosati FCPA, FCA, ICD.D, GCB.D, CCB.D) and Women in Mining Canada. (Current Chair Melissa Ng, MBA, P.Geo. founded by Amanda van Dyke) These groups are fast-growing in memberships and fostering collaboration, expanding capabilities, and providing a platform for women to enhance their visibility in the mining community. We have made some progress with Women on Boards and now CEOs of companies (just to name a few): Lomiko Metals (Belinda Labatte, CFA, MBA, ICD.D,) Torex Gold Resources Inc (Jody Kuzenko) Amerigo Resources (TSX: ARG) (OTCQX: ARREF) (Aurora Davidson) And let's not forget women like Margaret "Peggy" Kent who gained a long and controversial run as a mining executive, particularly as CEO of Royal Oak Mines (when she was named Peggy Witte) in the mid 90's when female representation was minimal in Mining. The International Day of Women in Mining (IDWIM), an annual global campaign, plays a crucial role in highlighting the achievements of women in this field and advocating for gender equity. Breaking barriers and building mines — women are shattering stereotypes and paving the way for inclusion and diversity in the mining industry. In Mexico, there are currently 66,000 women in mining, representing 16.3% of the workforce in mining. From engineers to geologists, our team of 96 women at our Zimapán operations has grown significantly from 69 at the end of 2021. With every step forward, these women are reshaping the industry, demonstrating that there are no limits to what we can achieve!
