What if a single document could challenge centuries of entrenched inequality and redefine the status of women globally? 🌎 The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly, is often described as an international bill of rights for women. This past week, I sat in on a presentation by Soon-Young Yoon on the history and future of CEDAW in the US and around the world. 📄 CEDAW provides a comprehensive framework for addressing and eliminating gender discrimination with legal obligations for countries who ratify it. So, in terms of our advocacy, where do we start? I would recommend this resource- a workbook for those seeking to integrate Women's Human Rights into their local laws and jurisdictions. Authored by Krishanti Dharmaraj and Soon-Young Yoon, the workbook, "Making Rights Real for Future Generations" is a great starting point. Here's to a brighter future for women across the globe. ⚡Breakthrough in the revised #UNTC Terms of Reference (bit.ly/4d706ie): Human rights take center stage -  a major win for fiscal justice. The efforts towards a #UNTC should align with/ “international human rights law” & States’ commitments to guarantee "all human rights of all people in all countries". 🔸 As argued by CESR & allies, the new text also eliminates previous references to “privacy” that could have undermined tax transparency. See our analysis of how global voices through 103 submissions shaped this change: https://bit.ly/3A0nsHY 🔸 This landmark shift puts #HumanRights at the heart of the proposed new global tax policy - a crucial step towards a more equitable fiscal framework. We won’t stop calling for the #UNTaxConvention to redress gender biases and ensure adequate resourcing of women’s rights. 🔸 What’s next? 👀 The final round of negotiations kicks off in New York from 29 July - 16 August. We’ll be there, ensuring that human rights & key issues for the Global South, such as Illicit Financial Flows (IFF),  remain central to the #UNTaxConvention. Stay tuned for updates!
