Women have made a strong comeback at nearly every level of supply chain leadership in 2023. Especially good progress has been made at the C-suite and executive levels, with women now holding 26% of CSCO/SVP/EVP/CPO roles. This is an all-time high, up from 19% in 2022. However, frontline roles still lag behind in terms of recruitment and retention, according to new research from Gartner. Chief supply chain officers (CSCOs) routinely report challenges with attrition at frontline roles in manufacturing and logistics, especially compared to desk-based roles. The ability to attract more women to such roles – and especially to leadership roles in the ranks of physical operations – could form a material competitive advantage. Providing flexibility was found to be the most effective means of attracting and retaining women in frontline roles, significantly outperforming other initiatives such as fringe benefits, employee engagement programmes and even a focus on pay equity. However, only 41% of supply chain leaders had implemented a workplace flexibility initiative in their organization, according a recent survey by female supply chain community boom! Global Network. Meet Zendyn Lakdavala, a driving force in procurement at Monash University, where she holds the position of Strategic Procurement Manager. She's also playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of women in procurement as a valued member of the BRAVO Leadership Program for Women in Procurement and Supply Chain. To succeed in a procurement career, Zendyn shared with the BRAVO team that “on an operational level, the procurement industry throws ad hoc and unforeseen challenges at you regularly.” Therefore, it’s important to “operate with agility and flexibility in your role, adapting to the situation on hand”. Inevitably, you will encounter obstacles in your career path. However, Zendyn encourages us to “reflect on the challenges and risks we’ve faced because we grow and learn from each one of those, on a personal and professional level, as we aim to become more resilient but also more human leaders”. For anyone just starting their procurement journey, Zendyn advises to “take the time to move through each step of [your] career ladder to understand the different streams within procurement and to take a holistic view on how their actions, strategies and decisions contribute to benefit the wider communities and supply chain they operate within”. Resilience is an important skill for your career, as well as being “bold and consistent with your behaviour” as it is “a great starting point to demonstrating leadership in any position”. Considering coaching is a very 'relational' intervention, the thing I sometimes struggle with is saying goodbye to my clients when all the work has been done, knowing that I might never see them again or ever find out "what happened in the end" (an ongoing topic I bring to supervision!). After all, successful coaching means that our clients ultimately no longer need us! We've equipped our clients with the tools, strategies and approaches, the learning and deeper reflections, that enable them to more confidently and ably live a life of their choosing, achieving their own personal and professional ambitions. In reality some stay in touch, the odd email every now and again (which I love to read), or come back for more a few months or even years later, when they need to create some time to think about their latest challenge. Or maybe you hear about them, because they've recommended you on to a friend or colleague. However as coaches we must assume, in a very healthy and happy way, once we've said goodbye, that's it! So it's really fabulous when you see a post like this (one of the upsides of our globally connected world) and you realise the small part you played in someone else's journey and how they've gone on to positively impact hundreds of others by being the best version of themselves. Way to go Cat Brownlie. 😊 This is why I love coaching, having a small but meaningful impact on others each and every day. What do you love about what you do? WOW! A few weeks ago, I heard Anne Davis Gotte on a panel with Women's Foodservice Forum (WFF) talking about leaning into tough conversations as a leader. She was articulate, insightful, and I think everyone needs to hear the message she shared below. I know I did!!! - “We sometimes use the terms 'kind' and 'nice' synonymous. And in doing so, we’ve gotten it wrong. Nice is safe. Nice is afraid. Nice is about fitting in at any cost. Kind is brave. Kind is clear. Kind is honest. Kind cares enough to be uncomfortable and give you critical feedback. When we’re worried about being nice, we really screw up because all we do is try to 'smooth over' the cracks, but the cracks are still there. Kindness is about caring enough to land a message that’s deeply uncomfortable and doing it with as much empathy as you can so that it lands as well as it can for them. Kind might sound like, ‘I’m so uncomfortable and worried about how to say this because I’m afraid I might hurt your feelings, but I care enough to try it anyway.’ Being kind is brave.” - Ann Davis Gotte, VP of HR at General Mills

Spencer Stuart shares intriguing, fact-based insights on how boards of public companies around the world compare on governance measures like board composition, diversity, and effectiveness, based on 2023 data.
