Black women have been killing it in the kitchen since the beginning of time. Despite this fact, Black people — specifically Black women — have been underrepresented in the #culinary industry for decades. Although the number of Black chefs is increasing, there’s still plenty of progress to be made in giving us the recognition that we deserve. And with the new generation of Black foodies across the country looking to feed their culinary palates, there are several who are giving the people what they need — in the best way possible. This week, I’m shining the spotlight on the incredible Pinky Cole, founder of Slutty Vegan and a trailblazer in the plant-based food industry. Here are just a few reasons why I admire Pinky: 1. She’s revolutionizing fast food: Pinky’s turning the vegan food scene on its head with Slutty Vegan. When is the last time you waited in line for hours for a burger (or any food?!). 🍔🌱 2. She’s using her platform for good: Whether it’s paying off tuition for HBCU students or feeding those in need, she shows us that running a business and giving back can go hand in hand. A great reminder that kindness is a leadership quality. 3. She’s breaking barriers for the Black community: Pinky’s not just an entrepreneur—she’s a movement-maker. She’s creating jobs, opportunities, and representation for the Black community and inspiring future generations to believe in their potential. 4. She’s a master of the comeback: Losing her first restaurant didn’t stop Pinky - she came back stronger. Slutty Vegan is now a nationwide sensation, and her resilience is a powerful reminder that setbacks can pave the way for greatness. 🌟 This is really personally inspiring to me as one of my greatest fears is failing. 5. Over a year ago my husband, Dean Peaple , joined this company to launch a new division of window coverings. Through operations and production challenges, changes in leadership and the minimal marketing support common with ‘startups’ - my husband never gave up! I have watched him be tenacious and creative, using common sense, guerilla tactics, and teamwork- always finding a way. I know the road is long, - and I admire my husbands patience and perseverance. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐌𝐜𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 🍔 Raymond Albert Kroc was born on 5 October, 1902. At 13 he opened his first business, a lemonade stand. This was followed by a music store he opened with two friends. He forged his ID to go to war when he was just 15. This seems to have been the thing to do at that time, as Walt Disney did the same. In fact, that’s how the two met. Shortly after completing his training, the war ended. This was followed by a period of odd jobs and piano playing, before finally settling in at Lily Tulip Cup Co, selling paper cups. A decade later, he started selling milkshake multimixers, which is how he found about this restaurant called McDonald’s. The rest, as we all know, is history. One Lesson from Ray Kroc. It’s never too late. At 59, he bought McDonalds for $2.7 million. His success has become a legendary example in the business world, showcasing that it's possible to achieve groundbreaking success at any stage in life. His story is a powerful reminder that with determination, vision, and hard work, it's never too late to pursue your dreams or change the course of your career. Costco is a different kind of place. It's one of the most admirable capitalistic institutions in the world. And its CEO, Jim Sinegal, is one of the most admirable retailers to ever live on this planet. Costco will continue making huge contributions to society. It has a frantic desire to serve customers a little better every year. When other companies find ways to save money, they turn it into profit. Sinegal passes it on to customers. We honor the trailblazers who have left an indelible mark on our society through their leadership and commitment to improving lives, and as we celebrate Black History Month, i. Bernard J. Tyson, healthcare executive extraordinaire and former CEO of Kaiser Permanente, the first African-American to have this role, was one such visionary leader whose legacy continues to inspire us. Dr. Tyson, who sadly passed away much too soon, was a steadfast advocate for equitable healthcare, believing in the power of action when action has to happen no matter the obstacles. "Don't ask for permission to help improve the lives of the people in the communities you're pledged to serve, but instead march through the doors of red tape, make bold moves and usher in access." - Bernard J.
