I’m at Aurora Energy Research’s Renewables Summit 2024 in central London today where we are covering all angles of renewables business cases on a European wide scale. This includes the possible impact of the next general election in the UK next week, grid constraints, co-location as a solution for curtailment and offshore wind targets. A particularly thought-provoking keynote speech was delivered by my colleague Ashutosh Padelkar who discussed the sensitives of location for project curtailment rates and how this impacts renewables’ IRRs. This is particularly crucial when considering areas that still lack grid buildout close to demand centres and thus experience higher rates of curtailement; illustrated through the example of the Iberian market. In comparison to locations equally as close to demand centres but experiencing lower rates of curtailment due to lower constraints. 💡Acc. to International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)'s latest data, in 2022 global offshore wind capacity grew to 63.2 GW, signaling a positive development. 🌊 However, to comply with a 1.5°C Scenario, the global offshore wind capacity would need to increase to 494 GW by 2030 and 2 465 GW by 2050. 📈 But the current pace of deployment is not enough to comply with the ambitious 1.5C goal.
